We Resist: Day 448

a black bar with the word RESIST in white text

One of the difficulties in resisting the Trump administration, the Republican Congressional majority, and Republican state legislatures (plus the occasional non-Republican who obliges us to resist their nonsense, too, like we don't have enough to worry about) is keeping on top of the sheer number of horrors, indignities, and normalization of the aggressively abnormal that they unleash every single day.

So here is a daily thread for all of us to share all the things that are going on, thus crowdsourcing a daily compendium of the onslaught of conservative erosion of our rights and our very democracy.

Stay engaged. Stay vigilant. Resist.

Earlier today by me: The Media Abetted Trump — and Not Just the Tabloids and F#@k Paul Ryan.

Here are some more things in the news today...

Maggie Astor at the New York Times: Holocaust Is Fading From Memory, Survey Finds.
For seven decades, "never forget" has been a rallying cry of the Holocaust remembrance movement.

But a survey released Thursday, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, found that many adults lack basic knowledge of what happened — and this lack of knowledge is more pronounced among millennials, whom the survey defined as people ages 18 to 34.

Thirty-one percent of Americans, and 41 percent of millennials, believe that two million or fewer Jews were killed in the Holocaust; the actual number is around six million. Forty-one percent of Americans, and 66 percent of millennials, cannot say what Auschwitz was. Only 39 percent of Americans know that Hitler was democratically elected.

"As we get farther away from the actual events, 70-plus years now, it becomes less forefront of what people are talking about or thinking about or discussing or learning," said Matthew Bronfman, a board member of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, which commissioned the study. "If we wait another generation before you start trying to take remedial action, I think we're really going to be behind the eight ball."
Part of this is, of course, a function of younger generations having fewer organic opportunities to interact with Holocaust survivors. I'm 43, and I worked for a Holocaust survivor for many years. He was a child while in the camp, and he is now retired. To work closely with a survivor as I did is something that people younger than I are vanishingly unlikely to experience.

And part of it is also that Republicans' decades-long erosion of public education has consequences. Among them is diminished knowledge of history, even events as significant — and necessary to understand — as the Holocaust.

Which is naturally part of the objective. It's not a bug of subverting education, but a feature, to create a populace ignorant of historical details that might raise alarms regarding your own social abuses.

On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, let us remember that institutional forgetting abets the replication of horrors that never should have been tolerated in the first place.

Donald Trump is a terrible president and a terrible human being, part wev in a nightmarishly endless series:

What a fucking ghoul he is.

Robert Costa at the Washington Post: Bannon Pitches White House on Plan to Cripple Mueller Probe and Protect Trump.
Stephen K. Bannon, who was ousted as White House chief strategist last summer but has remained in touch with some members of [Donald] Trump's circle, is pitching a plan to West Wing aides and congressional allies to cripple the federal probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

The first step, these people say, would be for Trump to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, who oversees the work of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and in recent days signed off on a search warrant of Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen.

Bannon is also recommending the White House cease its cooperation with Mueller, reversing the policy of Trump's legal team to provide information to the special counsel's team and to allow staff members to sit for interviews.

And he is telling associates inside and outside the administration that the president should create a new legal battleground to protect himself from the investigation by asserting executive privilege — and arguing that Mueller's interviews with White House officials over the past year should now be null and void.
So glad (cough) that guy's back. Not that he ever really left.

(And hey — remember when I was like, "Bannon's not really going anywhere; he and Trump are still BFFs, and Bannon's just escaping the scrutiny of the White House," and a bunch of people screamed at me on Twitter that I was crazy and wrong and SHUT UP CUNT, but now here we are and the WaPo, which — among many other publications, totally bought the "Bannon and Trump are OVER!" narrative hook, line, and sinker — publishes a line like "Bannon...has remained in touch with some members of [Donald] Trump's circle" like no big whoop, we all knew that was happening, right? ANYWAY.)

I mean, these are dots that are not hard to connect. Yesterday comes the news that the Senate is preparing bipartisan legislation to limit Donald Trump's ability to fire Special Counsel Bob Mueller. Today comes the news that Steve Bannon is advising Trump to fire Rod Rosenstein instead. Welp.

[Content Note: White supremacy] Casey Quinlan at ThinkProgress: Trump Judicial Nominee Won't Say She's Opposed to School Segregation. "Wendy Vitter, a lawyer nominated by [Donald] Trump for district judge of the Eastern District of Louisiana, would not tell senators she believed Brown v. Board of Education was correctly decided. During her Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) asked her whether she agreed with the 1954 landmark case that declared state laws allowing school segregation were unconstitutional. Vitter, counsel for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans, said, 'I don't mean to be coy, but I think I get into a difficult area when I start commenting on Supreme Court decisions, which are correctly decided and which I may disagree with.' When Blumenthal asked again, 'Do you believe it was correctly decided?' Vitter answered, 'My personal, political, or religious views I would set aside.'" Wow.

[CN: Anti-choicery] Jennifer Bendery at the Huffington Post: Trump Court Pick Thinks Planned Parenthood 'Kills Over 150,000 Females a Year'. "Vitter, a New Orleans lawyer and Trump's choice for a lifetime seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, [claimed in a May 2013 speech in protest of a new Planned Parenthood clinic in New Orleans that Planned Parenthood kills more than 150,000 women every year]. ...[W]hen Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) asked her if she stands by that claim, she avoided answering over and over again. ...'My personal views in this role, I need to a make a conscious effort and will do so to set this aside…' Blumenthal cut her off. 'I'm really not asking you about setting aside personal views,' he said. 'I'm asking you, very simply, you said Planned Parenthood kills 150,000 females a year. 150,000 people. Do you stand by that statement? It's a yes or no.'" Wow the Squeakquel.

[CN: Sexual violence; assault; description of sexual assault] Addy Baird at ThinkProgress: Woman Testifies That Missouri Governor Hit Her, Sexually Assaulted Her. "A Missouri House committee released a report Wednesday regarding allegations of sexual assault against Gov. Eric Greitens (R), saying in the report that they believe the woman who made the allegations is credible. Greitens called the investigation a 'political witch hunt' and has refused to step down as governor or as a candidate for reelection. The 25-page report marks the first time the public has heard sworn testimony from the woman who has said Greitens assaulted her. In her testimony, the woman told a graphic story in which Greitens invited her to his home in 2015 while his wife was away, tied her up in the basement, and ripped open her clothes, all without her consent. Greitens then allegedly blindfolded the woman and took photos of her, called her 'a little whore,' and threatened to make the photos public if she ever spoke about the incident. Greitens attacked the woman when she tried to leave the basement and forced his penis into her mouth."

[CN continued from above] This is an act of sexual violence, and yet the headlines and various descriptions of what happened have been shockingly inadequate. Greitens did not merely "sexually harass" her or "force her to give him oral sex." It's not sex. Of any kind. Sex is consensual. What he did was sexual assault. And even outlets that don't completely soft-pedal it are still stumbling badly. I mean:

The failure to call sexual violence what it is, bluntly, will never stop enraging me. Never.

[CN: Privacy violations; video may autoplay at link] Brian X. Chen at the New York Times: I Downloaded the Information That Facebook Has on Me: Yikes. "When I downloaded a copy of my Facebook data last week, I didn't expect to see much. My profile is sparse, I rarely post anything on the site, and I seldom click on ads. (I'm what some call a Facebook 'lurker.') But when I opened my file, it was like opening Pandora's box. With a few clicks, I learned that about 500 advertisers — many that I had never heard of, like Bad Dad, a motorcycle parts store, and Space Jesus, an electronica band — had my contact information, which could include my email address, phone number, and full name. Facebook also had my entire phone book, including the number to ring my apartment buzzer. The social network had even kept a permanent record of the roughly 100 people I had deleted from my friends list over the last 14 years, including my exes."

[CN: Video may autoplay at link] This isn't so much as a resistance item, but a heads-up about precautions you may need to take, depending on where you live... Sean Rossman at USA Today: What You Need to Know About the E. Coli Outbreak, Now in 7 States. "An e. coli outbreak with no known source has spread to seven states, infecting 17 people and prompting an investigation by state and federal health officials. The state hit hardest by the outbreak is New Jersey, which has six cases that led to the investigation of a Panera Bread. Other states include: Idaho, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Missouri, and Washington. The cases resulted in six hospitalizations and started between March 22 and March 31, affecting mostly women. Those sick range in age from 12 to 84, notes the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, there is no known source at the time. ...To avoid E. coli, wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, cook meat completely, wash fruits and vegetables, avoid raw milk, and don't prepare food when you're sick."

[CN: Video may autoplay at link] Ricardo Cano, Lily Altavena, Lorraine Longhi, and Kaila White at the Republic: Thousands of Teachers, Parents, Students Participate in #RedForEd Walk-Ins. "Thousands of parents and students across Arizona joined teachers walking into their schools Wednesday morning as a show of solidarity for the #RedForEd effort to boost education funding in the state. Participants wore red and carried signs during the rallies scheduled before the first school bell rings. The walk-ins were planned so as not to disrupt class time." Seriously, Betsy DeVos or anyone else who wants to accuse teachers of not caring about their students during these protests can kiss my fat ass. They're fighting for themselves and their students while planning that fight "so as not to disrupt class time." Goddammit. Blub.

The Media Abetted Trump — and Not Just the Tabloids

Ronan Farrow has an extensive piece at the New Yorker today, documenting how the National Enquirer repeatedly bought salacious stories people were peddling about Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican primary and general election, just to bury those stories.

We already knew that the Enquirer pulled this stunt with Karen McDougal, the former Playmate with whom Trump reportedly had an affair while married to Melania, and this piece tracks a similar trajectory regarding a tale about a child (now an adult) who is allegedly the product of another of Trump's affairs.

I recommend reading the entire piece, but I just want to highlight this excerpt:

In the summer of 2017, the Associated Press began investigating A.M.I.'s suppression of the story. At one point, reporters were hours away from posting a piece, but A.M.I. assembled a legal team to lobby against publication. The team included Lanny Davis, a crisis manager and longtime confidant of Bill and Hillary Clinton who did similar work on behalf of Harvey Weinstein. Davis and Howard met with a reporter, an editor, and a lawyer from the Associated Press. Citing attorney-client privilege, Davis said that he could not reveal the legal advice he gave Howard, but he described some of what happened in the meeting.

Davis told me that Howard presented the A.P. with claims that cast doubt on Sajudin's character, including the allegations on the anonymous Web site. "When Dylan told me he had these documents and he hoped he would kill the story, my opening statement was, 'I am not here to kill any story. That's not what I do for a living,'" Davis told me. "I encouraged my client, Mr. Howard, to reveal what he had about the source of the story." Davis said he told the A.P., "It's up to you to decide whether to write the story as a 'he says, he says' or not." At the time, the A.P. did not run the story.

On Wednesday, thirty minutes after The New Yorker contacted A.M.I. for comment about the payment to Sajudin, Radar Online, an A.M.I. publication, posted a story acknowledging the thirty-thousand-dollar payment but saying that the former doorman's story was false. The Radar Online piece quoted Howard saying, "When we realized we would be unable to publish, and other media outlets approached the source about his tale, we released Sajudin from the exclusivity clause that had accompanied his $30,000 payment, freeing him to tell his story to whomever he wanted."

Two A.M.I. employees told me that they'd never seen such a release during their time at the company. A.M.I. has said that Karen McDougal, the former Playboy model, has a similar amendment to her contract, but McDougal argues that the company continues to try to prevent her from talking to the press.
The reason I am highlighting that excerpt is because here are the AP and Radar this morning:

screencap of an AP article headline: '$30,000 rumor? Tabloid paid for, spiked, salacious Trump tip'

screencap of a Radar article headline: 'Prez Love Child Shocker! Ex-Trump Worker Peddling Rumor Donald Has Illegitimate Child'

So, not only did the company that owns the National Enquirer and Radar buy the story about Trump's secret child just to bury it, but the Associated Press, a highly-regarded international wire news service, buried their story on it, too.

And now both companies are scrambling to try to (unsuccessfully) whitewash their roles in abetting Trump's rise to the presidency.

This, of course, is hardly the only evidence we have of media abetting Trump, from their disproportionate focus on Hillary Clinton's emails to broadcasting empty podiums for days.

And it was hardly just rags like the Enquirer. It was "serious" news outlets; broadcast and print media. They abetted Trump in myriad ways, and they still won't own up to it.

Question of the Day

Suggested by Shaker lattendicht: "What's one piece of advice you have for a person heading off to university/college?"

Honestly? That it might not be the greatest time of your life. And if everyone around you seems to be having a great time except for you, know that you're not the first person who's had the experience; you're probably not even the only person on your campus.

College doesn't suit everyone, even people who seem suited to it, and who expected to love it.

That can be a real mindfuck.

Hang in there. Or don't! Do whatever works for you. Life is going to take you to in unexpected directions that you haven't even yet begun to anticipate. College probably will not be relevant to most of them.

* * *

The above advice is directed at young people heading off to uni. For older and/or returning students, I wouldn't even know what advice to give, because I haven't had that experience and thus have no wisdom to offer! So I would simply say: Good luck! I hope it is everything you want it to be!

None of This Is Good

Three items of note this afternoon:

1. Chris Strohm and Jennifer Jacobs at Bloomberg: Trump Ordered DOJ to Hire Controversial Former Aide, Sources Say.

Donald Trump personally ordered the Department of Justice to hire a former White House official who was fired after he was caught up in a controversy over the release of intelligence material to a member of Congress, according to people familiar with the matter.

Ezra Cohen-Watnick, who left the National Security Council last year, will advise Attorney General Jeff Sessions on national security matters. He was fired from the White House following reports that he had shown House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes classified documents.

...As a matter of policy, the White House generally doesn't approve the rehiring of staff who were fired, aides said. But after it became clear the president wanted Cohen-Watnick on Sessions' staff, the move was approved.
Yikes. It's bad news all around — not only that Cohen-Watnick has been rehired, no less into a position where he'll seemingly be tasked with bullying the Attorney General and obstructing justice, but also that Trump continues to behave like a dictator.

2. Yikes Part 2:

3. And Yikes the Third:

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Relatedly, there is reportedly a bipartisan Senate bill working its way out of the Judiciary Committee which would limit Donald Trump's ability to fire Special Counsel Bob Mueller. That seems like it would be a good thing, but I am cautious until I see the text of what's being proposed.

Also, as I noted earlier, Trump seems increasingly to be focused on Rod Rosenstein, who is the person with the power to fire Mueller, rather than on Mueller himself.

I don't suppose it's a coincidence that Senate Republicans want us to believe they're getting their shit together on protecting Mueller and his investigation right as Trump has switched strategies from going after Mueller directly to going after Rosenstein instead.

Prove me wrong, Republicans. I would love nothing more than to have to eat crow for underestimating you.

Convince me there really is a first time for everything.

Earlier today by me: Trump's Tweets on Russia Reveal His Continued Allegiance...to Russia and Paul Ryan Is Not Running Again, or Something.

Here are some more things in the news today...

Caitlin MacNeal at TPM: Trump Moved to Fire Mueller in December. "Following reports in December that special counsel Robert Mueller's team had subpoenaed a bank for records on [Donald] Trump, the President told advisers that he wanted to shut down Mueller's investigation, the New York Times reported late Tuesday. Reports at the time indicated that Deutsche Bank received subpoenas for records related to Trump and his family. This set Trump off, and he pushed for Mueller to go, according to the New York Times."

Trump, of course, does not have the legal authority to fire Mueller directly, despite his beliefs to the contrary. Which is probably why we're now hearing reports that he wants to instead fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who, due to Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recusal, currently fills the position which holds the power to fire Mueller.

Pamela Brown, Gloria Borger, Evan Perez, Jeff Zeleny, Dana Bash, and Dan Merica at CNN: Trump Considering Firing Rosenstein to Check Mueller. "This is one of several options — including going so far as to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions — Trump is weighing in the aftermath of the FBI's decision Monday to raid the office of Michael Cohen, the President's personal lawyer and longtime confidant. Officials say if Trump acts, Rosenstein is his most likely target, but it's unclear whether even such a dramatic firing like this would be enough to satisfy the President."

Trump is seemingly on a rampage, but I suspect this is actually just the prelude to his real rampage — which may come on several fronts, including whatever ostensibly retributive military actions he takes, as the warmonger John Bolton eggs him on.

Have I mentioned once or twice or three thousand times that I hope we all get through this safely? I hope we all get through this safely.

[Content Note: Nativism; white supremacy. Covers entire section.]

Alfonso Serrano at Colorlines: Three Southern States Pledge National Guard Troops to Reinforce Border Security.
Three Republican-led southern states on Monday (April 9) vowed to send 1,600 National Guard troops to the United States-Mexico border. It's a direct response to [Donald] Trump's pledge to militarize the border to stem immigration, and it comes as details emerge about the role troops will play in the area.

Per The Associated Press, Texas deployed 250 troops last Friday (April 6), and Governor Greg Abbot said he will add 300 troops per week until the number reaches 1,000. New Mexico expects to send 250 troops to its border, while Arizona officials said the state will deploy 225, followed by another 113 later in the week.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey told The AP that the National Guard troop's mission "is about providing manpower and resources to support federal, state, county, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies in stopping the flow of criminals, narcotics, weapons, and ammunition that is being trafficked into our state."

...On Monday, new details emerged about the role National Guard troops will play on the border. Their work will include maintenance of roads, providing support for drones and helicopters, and operating surveillance systems. Troops will also assist border patrol agents with arrests of immigrants and carry out armed patrols, according to the Washington Post.

"National Guard personnel will only be armed for their own self-protection to the extent required by the circumstances of the mission they are performing," Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Davis, a Department of Defense spokesman, told the Post.
Which means, of course, that any and every killing committed by National Guardsmen at the border will be attributed to self-defense. I would like to say I hope there is no violence along the border, but anyone who has been paying attention to what has been happening at the border for decades knows that it is already rife with violence and various abuses of power.

Speaking of which. [CN: Murder; domestic violence] Sarah Sarder and Tom Steele at the Dallas News: Border Patrol Agent Charged with Murder After Woman, Child Found Dead Near Rio Grande. "A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been arrested after the bodies of a woman and a 1-year-old child were found near a rural park in South Texas. The bodies of 27-year-old Grizelda Hernandez and her son Dominick Alexander Hernandez were discovered about 15 feet apart near the banks of the Rio Grande on Monday. Ronald Anthony Burgos-Aviles, 28 — the Border Patrol agent who reported finding the bodies — was arrested on two counts of capital murder, Laredo police announced Tuesday afternoon. Burgos-Aviles and Hernandez had been in a romantic relationship, police said at a news conference."

Still speaking of which. [CN: Disablism; abuse] Julia Ainsley at NBC News: Video Shows U.S. Agents Trying to Dump Injured Man over Mexican Border. "A video obtained by NBC News shows U.S. Border Patrol agents attempting to break international law by forcing an injured and mentally unstable man back into Mexico by falsely claiming that he is not in their custody, failing to identify him, and assuming he is Mexican because 'he looks like it.' U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided the video after a whistleblower first alerted NBC News to the existence of the footage. ...The incident occurred at the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico, California on March 27, 2017 and sparked a complaint by Mexican officials to CBP, which launched an investigation that ended with the agents being reprimanded, but ultimately keeping their jobs." Fucking hell!

E.A. Crunden at ThinkProgress: Justice Department Halts Legal Aid for Detained Immigrants Facing Deportation. "The Department of Justice will temporarily halt and review a program providing detained immigrants with legal advice and assistance, the latest move in a series of crackdowns on immigration and immigrant rights more broadly by the Trump administration. The Washington Post's Maria Sacchetti reported Tuesday night that the Executive Office for Immigration Review intends to 'conduct efficiency reviews which have not taken place in six years.' The implications will be immediate: Officials told the Vera Institute of Justice that the organization's government-backed Legal Orientation Program (LOP) will be paused beginning this month."

[CN: Carcerality] Nnennaya Amuchie at Rewire: Cash Bail Fuels the Prison Industrial Complex, But We Can Stop It. "Cash bail requires someone who is charged with a crime to pay in full, as assurance that they will return for their court dates. When someone cannot afford the cash bail issued by the judge, they are incarcerated while awaiting trial or until they are able to afford the payment. Many people use surety bonds, where a third-party bail bondsman pays for the bail amount in exchange for collateral, which often puts more people in debt. Sixty percent of people in women's jails have not yet been convicted of a crime and are awaiting trial. This means that our current jail system is punishing people before they have gone through due process and presented their case in front of a jury of their peers. The prison industrial complex is profiting off these individuals."

A Note About TJ Miller's "Bomb Threat"

[Content Note: Bomb threat; harassment; toxic masculinity; assault.]

You may have seen headlines over the past 24 hours or so that actor TJ Miller has been arrested by the FBI and charged with calling in a fake bomb threat.

That's technically accurate, but:

Essentially, he swatted her, except that he used the bomb squad instead of a SWAT team.

It is a highly relevant detail that Miller didn't just randomly call in a bomb threat, but instead targeted a specific woman for retribution, especially as he has previously been accused of sexually assaulting and punching a woman.

Something worth noting when the inevitable excuses about drinking to excess are made. Alcohol doesn't make someone a violent misogynist.

Paul Ryan Is Not Running Again, or Something

We've heard this before, but Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is reportedly not going to seek reelection to Congress at the end of this term.

I guess that makes it official? Who knows. The source of that tweet has a reputation for not knowing what the fuck he's talking about.

Anyway.

I have a few thoughts about why Ryan may be refusing to seek reelection.

1. He's a coward who wants to escape accountability for the collapse of our democracy, which he eagerly helped create.

2. He's only "retiring" from the House so that he can run for the Senate. There aren't any strong Republican challengers for Tammy Baldwin's seat in Wisconsin, which the GOP would very much like to claim.

3. This news, especially combined with the news that his predecessor John Boehner will campaign with GOP candidates (whut), is all designed to be a huge distraction from something Trump is fixing to do.

4. There's something ugly about to come out about Ryan — or would have, if he hadn't agreed to ride off into the sunset.

5. He's a money-grubbing jerkbag who feels the time is right to segue into the private sector and find a sinecure at some conservative think[sic]tank or become a commentator who shares his cool thoughts as the country burns.

6. He wants to spend more time with his barbells.

7. He's a coward.

Feel free to share your own theories, musings, and suspicions in comments!

Depending on why we're getting this news today, and whether it's serving some other purpose that isn't yet clear, it may not be accurate. But, if it is, I hope Paul Ryan's retirement is spent with his being treated exactly how he has always treated others.

Trump's Tweets on Russia Reveal His Continued Allegiance...to Russia

This morning, Donald Trump published a series of tweets, which, on their face, are clearly designed to invite us to believe that the Very Serious and Strong United States President has had it with Russia trying to push us around.

After again insisting "No Collusion or Obstruction (other than I fight back)," he launched into a series of ranting tweets posted over several hours:

There's a lot going on here, starting with the fact that his messaging appears to be totally incoherent. He starts by ostensibly "threatening" Russia, but then inexplicably claims that it's an investigation which is causing "bad blood with Russia."

I say his messaging appears to be totally incoherent, because it isn't really, when you scrutinize what he's doing. Which is using his earlier tweets to publicly warn Russia that a response is coming.

Remember in his scary rant Monday night, he said: "We're making a decision as to what we do with respect to the horrible attack that was made near Damascus. And it will be met, and it will be met forcefully. And when, I will not say, because I don't like talking about the timing."

Because it has to be enough time for Russia to move their assets out of the way. And his "threatening" tweet was giving them the heads-up to get started on that.

Viewed through that lens, it's clear that all three tweets are still in service to his allegiance to Putin.

And indicative of his continued, breathtaking disloyalty to the United States.

One of the things I am learning, as I continue to become more proficient with makeup, is how to layer makeup in a way that works to achieve the look I want. This look is an experiment in layering color.

To get this look, I used Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Primer, followed by Juice Beauty's Stem Cellular CC Cream — and, on top of that, on just my nose and chin, Revlon's Photoready Color Correcting Pen in green, to help counteract redness. Under my eyes and on the tip of my nose, I used Smashbox's Photo Op Under Eye Brightener.

Along my cheekbones, I first used Tarte's Tarteist PRO Glow Liquid Highlighter in Exposed, then layered Nyx's Bright Idea Illuminating Stick in Coralicious on top of that, then layered Glossier's Cloud Paint in Puff on top of that. Perfectly glowy pink cheeks!

I lined the waterline of my eyes with Nyx's Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk, then colored my lids up to the crease with Nyx's Lingerie Matte Eye Tint in Lidli, which I blended out into ColourPop's unfortunately named Slave2Pink. I did my lashes with Thrive's Liquid Lash Extensions in Brynn (rich black), and set my brows with Rimmel's Brow This Way in Clear.

And then I did my lips in a layer of Nyx's Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Initiator, and layered Nyx's Intense Butter Gloss in Pink Macaroon on top of that.

So, yeah. Layers!

Which is probably about as close as this novice will ever get to the elaborate makeup routines of experts in contouring, lol. I am deeply admiring of people who have that sort of talent for makeup. It is deeply creative and expressive and cool. ♥

(As always, I'm not affiliated with any of these companies in any way, nor am I getting anything in exchange for these recommendations. I just like the products!)

Anyway! What's up with you?

Please note, as always, that advice should be not be offered to an individual person unless they solicit it. Further: This thread is open to everyone — women, men, genderqueer folks. People who are makeup experts, and people who are makeup newbies. Also, because there is a lot of racist language used in discussions of makeup, and in makeup names, please be aware to avoid turns of phrase that are alienating to women of color, like "nude" or "flesh tone" when referring to a peachy or beige color. I realize some recommended products may have names that use these words, so please be considerate about content noting for white supremacist (and/or Orientalist) product naming.

Discussion Thread: How Are You?

I'm feeling extremely anxious about what the horrendo nightmare duo of Donald Trump and John Bolton are going to do in Syria, and how the press will jerk off about how "presidential" it is no matter what, and what the reverberating global ramifications could be.

I'm feeling extremely anxious that cyberattacks on U.S. gas pipeline operators, which have barely gotten any mention in the media, are a shot over the bow threatening to disrupt our food supply.

I'm feeling extremely anxious about a whole lot of things, really, and although those two are topping the list right now, the leaderboard can change from moment to moment.

Basically, for a person who really, really hates seeing people hurt, the Trump administration is a relentless nightmare.

It takes a whole lot of processing to not let myself be overwhelmed by anxiety and anger while sitting in politics all day every day, with very few opportunities to truly look away and fully disengage my mind, and I'm tired of just the emotional energy it takes to retain some semblance of emotional stability.

But to not care isn't an option for me. Apathy is not part of my constitution. For good and bad.

And so, she persists.

How are you?

Oh.

I honestly don't even know what I could possibly say that I haven't already said countless times already.

Who advised Donald Trump? Who cares. He's going to do whatever the fuck he wants to do, of that we can be certain. And his party won't hold him accountable.

And, in the meantime, he's going to keep threatening us with it, personally or via his various sycophantic minions, because the person currently occupying the office of the United States president is a terrorist, who thrives on keeping his own people writhing in fear of what destruction of our democracy, laws, institutions, and/or norms he'll perpetrate next.
