This Election Is Triggering as Hell

[Content Note: Rape culture.]

Take him at his word. Interesting.

* * *

Between Donald Trump and all his nasty surrogates and the cowardly Republican leadership, and all their victim-blaming and slut-shaming and rape apologia and indifference, and the relentless onslaught of misogyny against Hillary Clinton and any woman who supports her, this election is just triggering as hell.

[CN: Descriptions of sexual assault] This is a terrific piece by Laura Bassett on that very subject: "Donald Trump and His Supporters Are Actually Making Women Sick."
Like all female reporters, especially those who write about rape and abortion, I've had to develop a thick skin. I laugh it off when men I've never met call me "ugly," an "idiot," a "cunt" ― or, my favorite, "Bitch Bassett Hound" ― on Twitter. I've had to let it go when they threaten to publish my home address and pay me a visit, or send me an email with the subject line, "BIG ears... tiny brain!!!" after I appear on cable news. I've learned by necessity to separate my work from my feelings when I cover a politician speculating about what women's bodies do in response to a "legitimate rape," or when I interview women with horrifying stories of sexual abuse.

But listening to the Trump tape as I sat on that plane felt different. A nominee of a major political party was caught boasting about sexual assault in a graphic way, talking about women as objects and feeling entitled to their bodies. I knew that I'd be expected to contribute to The Huffington Post's coverage once my plane landed...

The nausea in my stomach crept up into my throat. My chest felt heavy and squeezed, like someone was sitting on it. My jaw and teeth ached, and I realized I'd been clenching them. By the time the flight attendant reached out with a bag of pretzels, I was breathing into a brown paper bag I'd found in the seat pocket. I walked to the bathroom of the plane and hovered over the toilet, hoping my body would purge what was making me sick.

For me, as for many women, Trump's comments were personal. They triggered memories of an assault that I thought I had processed and put behind me more than a decade ago.
This, too, is my experience.

Because of the exact nature of Trump's comments and reported assaults, there are memories coming back to me that I have not thought about in many years. The "lesser" assaults, committed by men who were strangers to me. Who groped or grabbed or frotted me on my El train commute in Chicago, which I did for many years.

The man who masturbated in the seat across from me then grabbed me when I tried to get off the train. The man who squeezed my breast. The man who used the motion of the train on a packed car to try to mask that he was humping my hip. The men who touched or pinched my ass. The man who slid his hand in between my legs as I stood in a thick crowd of commuters during a seatless rush hour, and, just as Donald Trump described, grabbed my pussy.

Already a survivor of rape at that time, commuting became a minefield of dread and anxiety. I started going into work early, and staying late, just to avoid crowded rush hour trains. My life revolved around trying to avoid being assaulted on public transportation.

If a train came that looked too packed, I would let it go by, standing on the platform, waiting and waiting for a car that looked like there were enough people, but not too many, as though there were some magic combination. There wasn't, but I had internalized the pervasive messaging that I was responsible for preventing sexual assaults on me.

Covering this election, with the insistent combination of rape apologia and dehumanization of women, has folded time in a way that the edges of the present now touch the edges of that past.

I feel that same daily anxiety.

But now, I don't hold myself accountable. I instead direct the completeness of my ire at Donald Trump and his enablers and all the men who do the things he describes and is alleged to have done. Which is healthier. But it still doesn't make me feel safe.

In the News

Here is some stuff in the news today...

Good lord: "Joe Scarborough implodes." Pretty much.

[Content Note: Exploitation] Kurt Eichenwald has another great piece on Donald Trump's horrendous business practices: "A People's History of Donald Trump's Business Busts and Countless Victims."

[CN: Violence] This is a must-read: "Extremist militias recruiting in fear of Clinton winning election, activists say."

[CN: Sexual assault] Hell yes: "Sexual Assault Survivors Protest at Trump Tower." Brave women doing an important thing.

Wowwwww: "A new billboard in Dearborn, Michigan says in Arabic: 'Donald Trump: He can't read this, but he's afraid of it.'" A+

Donald Trump's idea of a "get rich quick" scheme includes becoming Secretary of State lololol! As step two! Hahahahaha! (Also: Trump's sad little cartoon is grade-A bullshit, but I'm presuming you already knew that.)

Vogue has endorsed Hillary Clinton: "Vogue has no history of political endorsements. Editors in chief have made their opinions known from time to time, but the magazine has never spoken in an election with a single voice. Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change. Vogue endorses Hillary Clinton for president of the United States."

LOL this guy! "Watch President Obama Crack Jokes About His Greatest Strength in a New Video For Hillary Clinton." The President also stopped by Stephen Colbert's show last night for some more silliness.

[CN: Injury] OMGGGGGG please don't do ghost pepper food challenges! "Man ate a pepper so hot it tore a hole in his esophagus."

"Woman and Her Dog Dress Like Wayne's World Characters for Halloween; Totally Nail It." As described!

Quote of the Day

"I'd advise Mr. Trump to stop whining and go try to make his case to get votes."—President Obama, on Donald Trump's absurd charge that the election is rigged. Right on, Mr. President!

But the larger point that I want to emphasize here is that there is no serious person out there who would suggest somehow that you could even—you could even rig America's elections, in part because they're so decentralized, and the numbers of votes involved. There's no evidence that that has happened in the past, or that there are instances in which that will happen this time.

And so, I'd advise Mr. Trump to stop whining and go try to make his case to get votes. And if he got the most votes, then it would be my expectation of Hillary Clinton to offer a gracious concession speech and pledge to work with him in order to make sure that the American people benefit from effective government.
President Obama also had a few words to say about how all this whining "really doesn't show the kind of leadership and toughness you want out of a president. He starts whining before it's even over? When things are going badly and you start blaming somebody else, then you don't have what it takes to be in this job. There are a lot of times when things don't go our way or my way. That's okay. You fight through it. Work through it."

Boom.

Last night, Melania Trump did an interview with Anderson Cooper, and it was a doozy.

Those were, of course, just the tip of the iceberg. Basically, Melania Trump just (re)confirmed what we all already knew: That her husband isn't fit to be president.

She Is...The One!

I've got a new post at Shareblue about how Team Trump flinging themselves and their stupid scandalmongering at Hillary Clinton reminds me of nothing so much as the Burly Brawl from the Matrix trilogy:

Just a seemingly infinite stream of Agent Smiths — indistinguishable from one another; identical in both visage and mission; single-mindedly bent on destruction — coming at Neo from all directions.

Trying every conceivable fight strategy, from every possible angle, they throw themselves at him and are rebuffed, flung to one side or up into the air like so many insubstantial pests.

"More" are called, and more are batted away. They pile on top of Neo, and he rises, his strength hurling them like ragdolls.

When I see Giuliani sputtering incoherently during an interview, or watch Paul Ryan awkwardly try to straddle supporting Trump and distancing himself from him, or imagine how deeply Ted Cruz must regret finally endorsing Trump mere days before the Billy Bush tape surfaced, I cannot help but picture a pile of toppled Agent Smiths, lying in the dust, defeated.

Unlike the infinitely replicating Agent Smiths, though, Trump's surrogates won't be able to spontaneously regenerate their reputations, for whatever they were worth in the first place.
There is much more at the link, including some of my fine, fine Photoshopping skillz, lol!

Discussion Thread: Election Excitement!

So, yesterday afternoon, I put up another thread on election anxiety, and, this morning, I thought we should have one on election excitement! Because, as I said recently:

This election is terrible. And also? IT IS AMAZING. I feel like every day there is a precious gift to appreciate, a gem buried in all the ash spewing forth from Mount Trump.

I have waited a very long time for this election, and it isn't going exactly how I'd hoped, to put it mildly, but I'll be goddamned if I'm gonna let Trump overwhelm my capacity to enjoy the good stuff. The great stuff. THE BEST STUFF.
So, if you need to express election excitement, here's a place to do it!

Discussion Thread: Election Anxiety

[Content Note: Bigotry; anxiety.]

I thought it might be time for another thread on election anxiety, given how many of us have been upset and/or triggered by accounts of Donald Trump's predation, his continued bigotry, and the number of apathetic or defensive responses to all of it.

Ahead of the 2012 election, I wrote:

This election feels like a referendum on every aspect of social justice to me: Are racists going to win the day and vote out our first African American president, not on his policies but his personhood? Are homophobes going to win the day and vote against marriage equality, in some or all of the places in which civil rights have been put to a vote? Are disablists/classists going to win the day and vote for Romney in the hope of overturning Obamacare and other key parts of the social safety net? Are misogynists going to win the day and vote to deny women agency and access to reproductive healthcare? Etc.

...As much as I can't wait for this election to be over...then there's the day after, and the day after... This is the third presidential election and fifth national election I've now covered, and, well, I don't normally feel this anxious about an election. It's a lot of different things, but I feel like I'm holding something slippery in my hands, and it's about to slide from my grasp and fall away.
I never imagined how much more anxious I could get. Would get, four years later.

Anyway. If you need to express election anxiety, here's a place to do it.

In the News

Here is some stuff in the news today...

[Content Note: Sexual assault] A fifteenth woman has come forward to speak out about being sexually assaulted by Donald Trump: "It was a story Cathy Heller had told many friends and family members over the years, but is only now telling in public. Some 20 years ago, she claims, when she met Donald Trump for the first and only time, he grabbed her, went for a kiss, and grew angry with her as she twisted away. 'Oh, come on,' she alleges that he barked, before holding her firmly in place and planting his lips on hers. It is exactly what Trump claimed, in the most recent presidential debate, that he did not do. And so Heller has added her voice to a chorus of women now accusing Trump of unwanted behavior. 'He can't claim we're all liars,' Heller said."

[CN: Sexual assault] Excellent point: "MGM, NBC, and The Apprentice producer Mark Burnett have been using what may be shaky legal arguments to protect Donald Trump from the release of tapes many say further reveal racist and misogynistic attitudes of the GOP's presidential nominee. Now it turns out they will relaunch the show in January with a new host, former California Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has also been accused of allegedly groping women on 'movie sets, in studios, and in other settings.'"

[CN: Misogyny] GOOD GRIEF: "Pennsylvania Man Wonders What Will Happen to America If Hillary Clinton Has Her Period." Maude save us.

My Shareblue colleague Peter Daou explains how "Clinton's emails, leaks and transcripts are a disaster—for her opponents."

"To the First Lady, with Love: Four thank-you notes to Michelle Obama, who has spent the past eight years quietly and confidently changing the course of American history."

[CN: Animal endangerment] "Can the rare, tiny Key deer survive a flesh-eating worm?" Oh dear, I hope so! A really good article about the efforts to help save the Key deer, which is what we owe them, given we're the ones who almost wiped them out.

In News That Surprises No One Who's Been Paying Even the Most Cursory Bit of Attention

[Content Note: Bigotry.]

Donald Trump wants to parlay his presidential run into media celebrity:

Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has informally approached one of the media industry's top dealmakers about the prospect of setting up a Trump television network after the presidential election in November.

...Mr Trump, whose campaign is headed by populist digital media entrepreneur Stephen Bannon, has denied that he wants to start his own channel. "I have no interest in a media company. False rumour," he told the Washington Post last month, following a Vanity Fair report that he and his advisers had explored the idea.
Yes, but, as we know, Trump is a liar.

There's no way Trump just goes away after this election if he loses. He will rededicate all his energies to leading a movement of white nationalists, misogynists, and bigots of every stripe through a media empire (or whatever other means, although media seems the most likely), because he's found a way to exploit and profit from bigotry, and he's not going to let it go.

On the Attack on the NC GOP Office

[Content Note: Terrorism; Nazi references.]

Over the weekend, a North Carolina Republican Party office in Hillsborough was firebombed: "An explosive device was thrown through a window of the office, causing some damage. The words 'Nazi Republicans, leave town or else' were also painted on a nearby building," accompanied by a swastika.

There were no injuries, and no arrests have been made. An investigation is ongoing.

Hillary Clinton responded by tweeting: "The attack on the Orange County HQ @NCGOP office is horrific and unacceptable. Very grateful that everyone is safe."

Donald Trump responded by tweeting: "Animals representing Hillary Clinton and Dems in North Carolina just firebombed our office in Orange County because we are winning."

To be clear: There is no evidence that anyone representing Hillary Clinton or Democrats committed this act. Trump is making a very dangerous and irresponsible accusation.

It is, of course, possible that someone who is a Clinton supporter and/or affiliated with the Democratic Party committed this terrible crime. But possible doesn't mean certain.

There are also a number of other possibilities: Someone who is further to the left of Hillary Clinton and the Democrats and does not support them, either. Someone who is apolitical but just wants to cause chaos. Someone who is a Trump supporter and wants to frame leftists in an attempt to swing the election in their favor.

That last one is not without precedent. As you may recall, around this time right before the 2008 election, a young white female McCain supporter staged a racialized hoax, claiming a Black man had attacked her, robbed her, and carved a B (for Barack) into her face. I went out on a limb when the attack was first reported, urging caution because it sounded staged, and so it was.

I am urging caution once again.

There is no reason to speculate, and I ask that we not do so here. Let the investigation run its course.

Relatedly: A group of Democrats fundraised over $10k in response to the firebombing, to help the NC GOP rebuild its office. I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I understand the urge to change the narrative quickly and forcefully. On the other, there seems to be some "Not All Democrats" embedded in this action, which tacitly concedes this was done by Democrats (facts not in evidence) and also functions to position one's reputation above the safety of vulnerable people constantly under attack by Republicans in North Carolina, whose advocacy groups could have used that sort of money.

I hope anyone who donated to the rebuilding effort will match their donation (at least) to an organization like Equality NC or one of North Carolina's Planned Parenthood locations.

In sum: Let's not react rashly. Acts such as this require thoughtfulness and patience.

I strongly condemn the act no matter who committed it, and I am relieved no one was physically harmed, and I am grateful to Hillary CLinton for once again showing wise leadership in a tough moment.

A Few Things to Read...

[Content Note: Misogyny and bigotry.]

I've got a couple of new pieces over at Shareblue, published over the weekend...

1. "Dear Donald, from one pissed off American woman." This is a reprised piece, updated with the most recent developments.

2. "Will.I.Am's raw emotion about Trump is heartwrenching." During an interview with Joy Reid, Will.I.Am spoke about how sad Donald Trump's lack of compassion makes him. I got all choked up just watching it, because he's expressing something I imagine a lot of us are feeling. There's video and transcript at the link.

3. "'Rigged' election talk fueled by news media's utter disregard for Clinton's voters." On how the pervasive "low enthusiasm for Hillary" meme has contributed to Trump supporters' belief that the election is rigged.

Donald Trump and Mike Pence are laying the groundwork to delegitimize the election results. Many of their supporters are convinced the system is "rigged." And the corporate media have fueled their denialism by promulgating the erroneous narrative that there is "low enthusiasm" for Hillary Clinton's candidacy.

...Trump and Pence bear the brunt of the responsibility for fanning these dangerous flames, but the corporate media are also accountable for spending nearly two years pushing the narrative of "low enthusiasm" for Hillary Clinton.

It is within this falsified context — created with countless headlines about how she is unlikable or uninspiring; about how she isn't doing "well enough" with women, or Black voters, or Millennials; about the size of her rallies or the tone of her voice — that many Trump supporters have found a compelling basis for why their candidate must be winning.
