YES!

[Content Note: Transphobia.]

Yesterday, Attorney General Loretta Lynch delivered remarks at a press conference at which she announced the Department of Justice's complaint against North Carolina to halt its discriminatory anti-trans legislation, and it was pretty awesome:

The North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 2 in special session on March 23 of this year. ...The bill was signed into law that same day. In so doing, the legislature and the governor placed North Carolina in direct opposition to federal laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex and gender identity. More to the point, they created state-sponsored discrimination against transgender individuals, who simply seek to engage in the most private of functions in a place of safety and security – a right taken for granted by most of us.

...This action is about a great deal more than just bathrooms. This is about the dignity and respect we accord our fellow citizens and the laws that we, as a people and as a country, have enacted to protect them – indeed, to protect all of us. And it's about the founding ideals that have led this country – haltingly but inexorably – in the direction of fairness, inclusion and equality for all Americans.

...What we must not do – what we must never do – is turn on our neighbors, our family members, our fellow Americans, for something they cannot control, and deny what makes them human. This is why none of us can stand by when a state enters the business of legislating identity and insists that a person pretend to be something they are not, or invents a problem that doesn't exist as a pretext for discrimination and harassment.

...This law provides no benefit to society – all it does is harm innocent Americans.

Instead of turning away from our neighbors, our friends, our colleagues, let us instead learn from our history and avoid repeating the mistakes of our past. Let us reflect on the obvious but often neglected lesson that state-sanctioned discrimination never looks good in hindsight. It was not so very long ago that states, including North Carolina, had signs above restrooms, water fountains and on public accommodations keeping people out based upon a distinction without a difference. We have moved beyond those dark days, but not without pain and suffering and an ongoing fight to keep moving forward. Let us write a different story this time. Let us not act out of fear and misunderstanding, but out of the values of inclusion, diversity and regard for all that make our country great.

Let me also speak directly to the transgender community itself. Some of you have lived freely for decades. Others of you are still wondering how you can possibly live the lives you were born to lead. But no matter how isolated or scared you may feel today, the Department of Justice and the entire Obama Administration wants you to know that we see you; we stand with you; and we will do everything we can to protect you going forward.
You can read the entirety of her statement here.

We see you; we stand with you; and we will do everything we can to protect you going forward.

The next time you hear some asshole saying that elections don't matter, that there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans, remember this moment: When a Democratic administration told transgender USians that they will do everything they can to protect them. From Republicans.

Question of the Day

What kind of worker are you at your job (paid or unpaid), or when you have a job (if you don't have one currently)? Are you an eager beaver? A workaholic? Someone who finds a good work-life balance? Someone who just shows up for the paycheck and does the bare minimum? Something else altogether? Does it vary, depending on the type of work?

Fat Fashion

This is your semi-regular thread in which fat women can share pix, make recommendations for clothes they love, ask questions of other fat women about where to locate certain plus-size items, share info about sales, talk about what jeans cut at what retailer best fits their body shapes, discuss how to accessorize neutral colored suits, share stories of going bare-armed for the first time, brag about a cool fashion moment, whatever.

* * *

image of me standing in front of a mirror wearing a white dress with purple polka dots and a purple cardigan

All dressed up for a Derby Party this weekend! Wearing (again) one of my favorite ModCloth dresses and a purple cardigan I've had for so many years I don't even remember where I bought it. Naturally, I was also wearing my purple Docs!

Anyway! As always, all subjects related to fat fashion are on topic, but if you want a topic for discussion: What is your favorite go-to outfit when you need to get a little dressy for an event?

Have at it in comments! Please remember to make fat women of all sizes, especially women who find themselves regularly sizing out of standard plus-size lines, welcome in this conversation, and pass no judgment on fat women who want to and/or feel obliged, for any reason, to conform to beauty standards. And please make sure if you're soliciting advice, you make it clear you're seeking suggestions—and please be considerate not to offer unsolicited advice. Sometimes people just need to complain and want solidarity, not solutions.

In the News

Here is some stuff in the news today...

Hillary Clinton is the winner of the Guam Democratic Caucuses. Congratulations, Hillary Clinton! Paging Tim Robbins!

[Content Note: Transphobia] This is yet another reminder that Republican state legislatures act in contravention of the will of the people: "Americans broadly oppose laws that would require transgender people to use facilities that correspond with their gender at birth rather than their gender identity, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll, and three-quarters favor laws guaranteeing equal protection for transgender individuals. Overall, 57% say they oppose laws requiring transgender individuals to use facilities that do not match their gender identity, 38% support such laws. Strong opposition (39%) outweighs strong support for these laws (25%). There's a partisan gap on the question, with Democrats and independents more apt to oppose them than Republicans. But Republicans aren't broadly in favor of them either."

[CN: Transphobia; homophobia] In related news: "The ACLU has filed a lawsuit challenging Mississippi's anti-LGBT 'right to discriminate' bill, HB 1523. Called one of the worst religious freedom bills to date in the U.S., HB 1523 (also known as the 'Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act') cuts out broad exemptions for individuals and businesses with 'sincerely held religious belief or moral convictions' that marriage 'should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman' to refuse service to LGBT people. The ACLU argues that HB 1523 directly contradicts the Supreme Court's gay marriage ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges by targeting LGBT people."

[CN: War on agency] "A number of states have unleashed a new strategy to further restrict a woman's legal right to end a pregnancy: Ban the safest way to perform a second-trimester abortion. ...The flurry of state-level activity over D&E has intensified since this legislation was first introduced in 2014. Just last week, Alabama passed a D&E bill—paired with legislation that would essentially treat abortion clinics like sex offenders. In March, West Virginia lawmakers overrode their governor's veto on a D&E bill that's now slated to go into effect at the end of May. All told, at least 15 states have proposed new D&E bans this session. If these bills become law, and follow the path of previous abortion restrictions that eventually became federal law, women may no longer be able to obtain a legal abortion when they're in most need."

[CN: Family separation; trauma; anti-immigrationism] This is a must-read from Tina Vasquez: "Family Separation: A Natural Byproduct of the U.S. Immigration System. There are millions of children in the United States born into households where one or more of their parents are undocumented—and thousands of these parents are deported each year."

[CN: Video may autoplay at link] In election news: "Hillary Clinton only needs 17 percent of remaining delegates to clinch nomination: Clinton won the Guam caucus on Saturday and now needs just 17 percent of the delegates at stake in upcoming contests to clinch the nomination. That means she could lose every single contest by a landslide and still be the nominee if all of her superdelegates continue to support her."

[CN: Misogyny] Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein unleashed a nasty, and unprecedented, attack on Hillary Clinton's commitment to "the values of being a mother" on Mothers' Day. There are a whole lot of things wrong with that, not least of which is the embedded implication that every mother has the same values. Not monolithizing mothers is one value that lots of moms probably have!

Donald Trump has chosen New Jersey Governor Chris Christie "to lead his White House transition team as he prepares for the general election campaign." Sounds about right.

[CN: Islamophobia] "Newly elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he wants to travel to the U.S. to collaborate with other mayors—but he won't be able to if Donald Trump wins the presidency. Khan, who was elected mayor last week after fending off racially charged attacks from his opponents, is Muslim. Trump, the presumed Republican nominee for U.S. president, has vowed to ban anyone practicing Islam from entering the United States. ...'I want to go to America to meet with and engage with American mayors. If Donald Trump becomes the president I'll be stopped from going there by virtue of my faith, which means I can't engage with American mayors and swap ideas.'" Welp.

This is awesome! "Viola Davis and Kerry Washington are Creating Production Companies: As a Black writer and viewer, I am overjoyed to learn that women who look like me and my friends are controlling our stories. From my writing classes, the television shows that I watch, and the movies that I see, I have learned that people both do not understand how to create diversity in their shows, and are not willing to listen or attempt to understand how to make their characters more realistic. Now, Davis and Washington are creating the opportunities that have been denied for decades, and we are all here for it."

[CN: Spoilers; misogyny] Did you watch the series finale of The Good Wife? I was underwhelmed! And kind of pissed! And also I liked some of it! Anyway. This piece by Megan Garber addresses some of my many complex thoughts about it.

US National Parks will begin selling naming rights. Ugh. Or, I dunno, we could raise taxes on wealthy people and corporations by a miniscule percentage?!

[CN: Moving GIF at link] And finally! "Stubborn Husky Throws Adorable Tantrum to Stay in the Bathtub." Ad advertised. LOL.

"All of the men—we're petrified to speak to women anymore! We may raise our voice— You know what? The women get it better than we do, folks! All right? They get it better than we do!"—Donald Trump, shouting nonsense at a rally.

Note the construction here: "The women get it better than we do, folks." We. Meaning men. He's talking about how much better women have it, while talking past the women in his crowd like they're not even there.

Our President

This weekend, President Obama gave the commencement address at Howard University, a historically black university and one of the nation's top 150 schools. I'm not even going to comment on it, except to tell you that he made me blub my face off, once again. This is a speech only a black president could give. This is a speech only a pragmatic progressive could give. This is a speech only President Barack Obama could give. I am going to miss him very much.

This Election

[Content Note: Misogyny.]

Donald Trump spent the weekend disgorging vomitous streams of escalating misogyny against Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren. He added disgusting commentary about Clinton's marriage and about Warren's heritage to his usual "woman card" repertoire, while continuing to bray about how he'd be awesome for women.

Meanwhile, the media's favorite new segment is musing about what female politician Trump might choose as his running mate in order to neutralize criticisms of his misogyny and attract more female support. Because obviously women are completely stupid.

I am, quite frankly, livid that the election in which we have the best chance of electing the first ever female president is simultaneously an election which is profoundly upsetting for so many women. Who risk being triggered just by following the news.

I am angry that the media barely mention the historic nature of Clinton's candidacy, and uncritically report Trump's misogyny.

And I grieve that Hillary Clinton has spent decades grinding her way through unfathomable amounts of mountainous shit in order to arrive at this moment: On the precipice of the presidency, only to be greeted by a final boss armed with the most vile misogyny.

Fort McMurray Wildfire Update

[Content Note: Wildfire; displacement.]

Early yesterday came the grim news that Canadian officials feared the Fort McMurray wildfire would rage for "months." But later in the day, the weather changed, bringing renewed hope of containment:

Officials said Sunday they reached a turning point in fighting an enormous wildfire, hoping to get a "death grip'" on the blaze that devastated Canada's oil sands town of Fort McMurray amid cooler temperatures and light rain. Meanwhile, a massive evacuation of residents displaced by the blaze came to an end.

Chad Morrison of Alberta Wildfire told a news conference he's "very happy" and called it great firefighting weather.

"We can really get in there and really get a handle on this fire and really get a death grip on it," said Morrison, who answered yes when asked if they've reached a turning point.

With cooler temperatures in the next three or four days, he said firefighters should be able to put out hot spots. And it has allowed them to further protect fire-ravaged Fort McMurray. "I feel very buoyed and happy that we are making great progress," he said.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said the wildfire grew much more slowly than was feared and it is now 161,000 hectares (397,831 acres). She said the blaze is quite a bit smaller than had been expected on Saturday, when officials expected the fire to double in size.

...Federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said they "may be turning a corner" but it's too early to celebrate and a lot of work remains.
A lot of work remains just to contain the fire, and a lot of devastation has been left in its wake. Upwards of 80,000 people have been displaced, and "the fire has torched 1,600 homes and other buildings. Gas has been turned off, the power grid is damaged and water is not drinkable. ...The fire and mass evacuation has forced a quarter or more of Canada's oil output offline and was expected to impact an economy already hurt by the fall in the price of oil."

But the fact that the fire did not spread as expected, and that weather conditions are conducive to fighting it, is very welcome news indeed.

Whut Whut Whut

[Content Note: Misogyny.]

Bernie Sanders' strategy to delegitimize Hillary Clinton's winning fair and square continues, in the most incredible fashion:

Sen. Bernie Sanders is accusing the Democratic National Committee of tilting the party's convention in favor of Hillary Clinton.

In a Friday letter to DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz obtained by CNN, Sanders said the chairs of two convention committees are active supporters of his rival. The two leaders -- Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, co-chair of the Platform Committee, and former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, the Rules Committee co-chair, are "aggressive attack surrogates" for Clinton. Frank has long battled with Sanders, penning an op-ed in Politico last summer titled "Why progressives shouldn't support Bernie."

"I do not, and the millions who have supported our campaign will not, have any confidence that either of them will conduct committee proceeding in an even-handed manner," Sanders wrote in the letter.

Sanders, who has tussled with the DNC several times this election season, said he's also disappointed that Wasserman Schultz selected only three of the more than 40 names he submitted for the standing committees.

"If the process is set up to produce an unfair, one-sided result, we are prepared to mobilize our delegates to force as many votes as necessary to amend the platform and rules on the floor of the convention," Sanders wrote.
Leaving aside Sanders' breathtaking accusations that Malloy and Frank can't act evenhandedly because they support Clinton—who is, after all, a longtime Democrat, their former colleague, and the current frontrunner—none of this even matters because SANDERS CANNOT WIN. Not unless the superdelegates start abandoning the frontrunner two months before the convention, in spite of the fact that her opponent is losing by hundreds of pledged delegates and millions of votes.

Clinton has won it, even if it's not yet official. Sanders cannot make up the difference, even if he wins the next few state primaries, because he flatly won't win by large enough margins to erase his deficit in pledged delegates.

Clinton doesn't need anyone to be "corrupt" on her behalf! SHE HAS ALREADY WON FAIR AND SQUARE.

I don't even know what to say anymore. I really don't. I am so angry.

In the News

Here is some stuff in the news today...

[Content Note: Fire; displacement] Yesterday I mentioned that 80,000 residents had been evacuated from the Canadian city of Fort McMurray because of a raging wildfire. Since then, 8,000 more people have fled. 210,000 acres have been engulfed by the flames, and more people who were stranded have left today: "A convoy of stranded residents sped back through the Canadian oil town of Fort McMurray, escaping the fire-ravaged region under police escort on Friday, taking the only route out as the massive wildfire spread." Meanwhile: "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is doing all it can to assist Albertans as a wildfire in Fort McMurray continues to grow for a fourth straight day. ...'Our government has met all of the Alberta government's request for assistance, including providing air assets and 7,000 cots for evacuees in emergency shelters, with 13,000 more on the way,' Trudeau said from Toronto on Friday, in an update on Ottawa's response to the wildfire." Please feel welcome and encouraged to leave suggestions for how to help in comments. You can donate to the Canadian Red Cross' emergency appeal on behalf of Fort McMurray here.

[CN: Guns; shooting] "Police said three people have been shot at Westfield Montgomery Mall at 7101 Democracy Blvd. in Bethesda on Friday morning and that a suspect is at large. Soon after, a woman was fatally shot at a grocery store several miles away, and authorities are investigating whether the incidents are linked." As of this writing, the conditions of the victims are unknown. Montgomery County Assistant Police Chief Darryl McSwain "said there is no suspect in custody but there is a 'person of interest and hopefully we can capture him in the near future.' He said they had 'no reason to believe the victims knew the suspect' in the mall shooting. Prince George's County police are heading to the scene of the mall shooting and investigating the possibility that the shooter is the suspect they've been searching for in connection with last night's shooting at High Point High School in Beltsville. Police said a man fatally shot his estranged wife, who was there to pick up her children, and wounded a bystander who had come to her aid. The man, Eulalio Tordil, 62, has not yet been located." Fucking goddammit.

In election news: Mitt Romney says he "won't be casting a vote for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton come November." He doesn't want Trump elected, but isn't so serious about it that he'd vote for Clinton. Heavens to Betsy.

Meanwhile, Rick Perry says he definitely will vote for Trump and is also open to being his VP. Never mind that Perry previously called Trump's campaign "a toxic mix of demagoguery and nonsense" and "a cancer on conservatism." PRINCIPLES! Rick Perry has definitely got them!

On the Democratic side of the aisle: Bernie Sanders has threatened "to challenge the DNC convention rules on the floor." Because of course he has.

[CN: Transphobia] And Hillary Clinton has left a lovely comment on the Facebook page of a trans girl who was harassed on a New York subway. Because of course she did.

[CN: Misogyny; racism] Here's a good piece about how the sexism of (many) Sanders supporters, and Sanders himself, has caused a feminist awakening, which I'm guessing may resonate strongly with some readers here: "Decades ago, Gloria Steinem had talked about the 'click,' moments, those aha, revelatory, eureka moments when a woman suddenly recognizes the gender discrimination she faces. I am sorry to say, I never had one of those consciousness-raising moments. That is to say, I had plenty of them. But on the behalf of others. Never for myself. Until now. ...Killary. Shrillary. She who yells too much. And a million other slurs that I see daily on Facebook but which are unprintable in this family publication. When the Republicans did it, it was easier to take. But these young, white men! They called themselves Progressives! ...But still, I told myself that surely the people that I encountered online were not a representative sample. Sanders himself seemed like such a decent man. Until... Until... the infamous 'unqualified' speech. That swooshing sound you heard was a million female heads spinning. Because if Hillary Clinton was 'unqualified' to be president, what woman ever would be? Not in our lifetime, for sure. Click."

[CN: Misogynoir] Rage seethe boil: "West Point is investigating a photo that shows 16 black female cadets in uniform displaying raised fists outside a U.S. Military Academy barracks. 'We can confirm that the cadets in this photo are members of the U.S. Military Academy's Class of 2016,' said West Point's director of public affairs Lt. Col. Christopher Kasker in an emailed statement. 'Academy officials are conducting an inquiry into the matter.' While many details are unknown about the photo, the image has been shared widely in military circles, with claims the women are supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. The raised fist is a symbol associated with Black Lives Matter, although it's been used for centuries to symbolize resistance by a number of groups, from labor unions to suffragists to socialists to the Black Panthers. ...Army Times received the photo Wednesday from several readers who are concerned the women violated Department of Defense Directive 1344.10, Political Activities by Members of the Armed Forces. The policy provides a list of political dos and don'ts for service members and cautions against 'partisan political activity' when in uniform." I just feel really angry about the idea that, even if these women were intending to convey "black lives matter," it's considered a "partisan political activity." Nevermind that Black Lives Matter is nonpartisan. "Black lives matter" is not a political statement. It is a fact. I mean, of course it is a political statement. But the only reason it's a political statement is because of THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T AGREE. Not because of the people who do. For fuck's sake.

[CN: Misogyny; harassment] "Hey assholes, Paul Feig is sick of your Ghostbusters crap." FEIG FURY FTW.

And finally! Ziggy the Traveling Piggy! I love how adorable this is, and I love that this family loves and accommodates Ziggy anyway, despite the fact that he was not the "teacup" pig he was alleged to be.

This is not entertainment. This is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the United States."—President Obama, earlier today.

You will note that, although he mentions the public, he says very specifically that he is talking to the reporters in the room. He is quite clearly talking to the media, especially, about their coverage of this election.

And, right on cue, the paper of record misses (ahem) that he was talking to the media: "President Obama addressing Donald Trump's candidacy: 'This is not entertainment. This is not a reality show.'"
