But We Are Each One and Deserve to Be Heard

[Content Note: Rape; rape culture.]

In case you have not yet seen it, this is the cover of today's New York Daily News.

image of the cover of today's New York Daily News, featuring Bill Cosby's mushot and a full-page headline reading HE SAID with 57 SHE SAIDs after it

It is a powerful image, and, much like the "empty chair" cover of New York Magazine, delivers a blunt commentary on how long Bill Cosby was allowed to carry on assaulting women and what it really looks like when rapists are not held accountable.

I am, however, concerned that the focus on the number of Cosby's victims, particularly as that number has been used to argue that the sheer number of survivors who are speaking out is proof of Cosby's guilt, is subtly but certainly reinforcing the cultural expectation that one survivor is not enough to be believed.

And there are a lot of problems with that dynamic. Not all survivors feel safe reporting, so there are almost always victims of serial rapists who do not publicly tell their stories. One survivor shouldn't be obliged to tell her story so that another will be believed. And what if there is only one victim at the point at which she comes forward? Are we meant to ignore her until there are more women harmed just to satisfy our desire for overwhelming evidence? What a heinous thought.

One person is enough.

Even when there are multiple victims of the same rapist, we are each one. And we each deserve to be heard.

And nothing should make that more plain than the fact that if one, just one, any one, of Cosby's victims had been believed, there wouldn't be as many as there are.

Jeb! is in trouble!

Jeb Bush's campaign is canceling its Iowa television advertising buy and shifting money to double staff on the ground in January, the final month before the high-stakes Iowa caucuses.

The news will raise questions about whether the former Florida governor might pull out of Iowa given his fifth-place status here, with just 6 percent support of likely GOP caucusgoers.

That's not the case, Bush campaign manager Danny Diaz told The Des Moines Register.

...The larger context is that Team Bush is making similar shifts from TV ads to its ground game in other early states, too. In January, they'll deploy 60 staffers from the Miami headquarters to the early states, including about 10 to Iowa.
This isn't because Bush is running out of money. It's because his campaign has already spent millions of dollars on television ads and they haven't made any goddamn difference. He still can't find the double-digits in the polls, even with binoculars.

So he's gonna try more people on the ground and see if that works. Spoiler Alert: It won't work! The only thing that will work is if Jeb! can figure out a way to Men-in-Black-neuralyzer the memory of his brother out of the brainpans of everyone on the planet.

Not that Iowa even really matters. I mean, Rick Santorum won Iowa once, so.

Today in Manclaiming

image of a Solo lemon-flavored fizzy drink can labeled 'MAN'S CAN' and 'THIRST CRUSHER'

Photo by my friend Kath and shared with her permission. This refreshing lemon-flavored drink ISN'T FOR YOU, LADIES. It doesn't merely quench human thirst, but CRUSHES IT! You can't handle the THIRST-CRUSHING POWER of the MAN'S CAN so don't even try!

Solo, I am mansplained by its website, has been "crushing the thirst of Aussie men since 1973" and is "outdoors, active, real lemon tang refreshment" that's "light on the fizz so you can slam it down fast."
Even our ads are famous. The legendary SOLO man, an Aussie icon, performed daring and adventurous feats in TV commercials right up until the late 90s - no challenge was too big if an ice cold can of SOLO was the reward!
What about the challenge of drinking a fizzy drink out of a can that hasn't been masculinized to indulge a fragile masculinity that is defined exclusively in contradistinction to the feminine?

Fantasy Casting: Indiana Jones

Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that a new Indiana Jones film is "coming," which has been rumored for quite some time, and it's likely the series will be a reboot with a new Indy, since Shia LeBeouf has already been used up and discarded by Disney and won't be able to relaunch the franchise as might have been hoped when he was cast in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Garbage.

We all know it's going to be Chris Pratt—

photoshopped image of Chris Pratt's face on Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones
Shakesville: The only place on the internet where you get a photoshop
of Chris Pratt as Indy using AndyDwyer Pratt and not ChiseledHero Pratt.

—but let's pretend there's a chance in hell that it will be someone who isn't Chris Pratt, or another white dude, and do some fantasy casting!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand go!

I see no reason why John Boyega shouldn't be in the Indiana Jones franchise, too.

I also can't get the idea of Ellen Page as Indiana Jones out of my head. I would also very much like to see her fall in love with Karen Allen. I'm just saying.

"Twitter Criticized for Hiring White Male as New Diversity Chief."

I'm sure Cody Nickelback (or whatever his name is) is definitely totally for sure the best diversity chief that has ever diversity chiefed in the history of diversity chiefing, but when you are obliged to hire a diversity chief because your staff is too white and too male, then hiring a white male diversity chief is literally part of the problem.

It Continues to Be a Real Mystery Why Republicans Aren't Connecting with a Majority of Female Voters

[Content Note: Rape culture.]

More terrific commentary on rape from another Republican legislator:

Using the profile name "Stick," [Republican Texas state Representative Jonathan Stickland] responded to a question about sex with his wife in a comment posted to a fantasy football discussion forum in 2008.

"Rape is non existent in marriage, take what you want my friend!" the lawmaker reportedly wrote to another forum user who complained that his wife would not perform the "reverse cowboy" position during sex.

Stickland suggested in another comment that he wanted to cheat on a drug test. ...The user called "Stick" later revealed that he had purchased a "detox drink" and was trying to hide it from his wife.
He seems neat! Since these comments were made public, Strickland, who obviously describes himself in his Twitter bio as a "Christian conservative liberty loving Republican" because what the fuck else would it say, has posted only "a single message on his normally busy Twitter timeline."

screen cap of tweet authored by Strickland reading: 'LIBERTY!!!! #txlege'

In the News

Here is some stuff in the news today...

[Content Note: Extreme weather; death] So awful: "Though the Mississippi River and its tributaries didn't top the 19 vulnerable levees that federal officials were monitoring, the dangers from a rare winter flood remained throughout Missouri and parts of Illinois on Wednesday. Swollen rivers and streams were pushed to heights not seen since the massive 1993 floods, causing Illinois to transfer an unknown number of inmates from a state prison and declare disasters in seven counties and prompting Missouri's governor to activate the National Guard to help divert traffic away from submerged roads. At least 20 deaths over several days in Missouri and Illinois were blamed on flooding, mostly involving vehicles that drove onto swamped roadways, and at least two people were still missing Wednesday. ...'Nobody that is living has ever seen anything like this,' [Pleasant Hope's director of emergency management] Rick Davis said."

[CN: Militarism] Welp: "The USS Harry S. Truman was crossing international waters in the Strait of Hormuz when Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRCGN) conducted a live-fire exercise right nearby, according to a statement. An Iranian navy attack craft fired several unguided rockets near the carrier, officials said. A French frigate, the U.S. destroyer USS Bulkeley and other commercial traffic were also in the area at the time of Saturday's incident. Only 23 seconds warning was given before the weapons were fired, according to U.S. Navy Cmdr. Kyle Raines, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command. The rockets were not fired at the Truman and other ships, and there were no direct communications between U.S. and Iranian navies, military officials said. 'The IRGCN's actions were highly provocative,' Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, spokesman for the U.S. Fifth Fleet, said Wednesday in a statement." So everything continues to go great in that part of the world then.

[CN: Refugee crisis; xenophobia] For fuck's sake: "A group of Senate Republicans wants to largely pause the acceptance of Syrian and Iraqi refugees until the administration meets a wide-range of hurdles aimed at bolstering background checks. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) has introduced legislation that would block the administration from accepting or resettling the refugees until the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Director of National Intelligence have determined that each refugee has passed a background check ensuring that they aren't a national security threat and haven't supported a terrorist organization." As Senator Dick Durbin rightly notes: "Refugees are the most carefully vetted of all travelers to our country." By the by, even the most absurdly untenable enhanced screening requirements cannot stop the "self-radicalization" about which we're hearing so much lately. People who are concerned about "self-radicalization" might do well to focus on stopping Islamophobic violence in the US, rather than worrying about whether refugees fleeing terrorists are themselves terrorists.

[CN: Police brutality; racism; death] Tamir Rice's mother, Samaria Rice, issued a statement on the grand jury's decision to refuse to indict the officers who killed her son, and it is heartbreaking: "My family and I are in pain and devastated by the non-indictment of officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback for the murder of our beloved Tamir. After this investigation—which took over a year to unfold—and Prosecutor McGinty's mishandling of this case, we no longer trust the local criminal-justice system, which we view as corrupt. Prosecutor McGinty deliberately sabotaged the case, never advocating for my son, and acting instead like the police officers' defense attorney. ...I don't want my child to have died for nothing and I refuse to let his legacy or his name be ignored. We will continue to fight for justice for him, and for all families who must live with the pain that we live with. ...[T]his entire process was a charade."

[CN: Misogyny; sex abuse] If you haven't yet read Rebecca Solnit's "Men Explain Lolita to Me," you should. It is great.

[CN: Worker exploitation] Damn: "Spotify Hit with $150 Million Class Action over Unpaid Royalties: Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker frontman David Lowery, retaining the law firm of Michelman & Robinson, LLP, has filed a class action lawsuit seeking at least $150 million in damages against Spotify, alleging it knowingly, willingly, and unlawfully reproduces and distributes copyrighted compositions without obtaining mechanical licenses."

This is why Aretha Franklin is the undisputed Queen of Soul.

John Boyega is everything. Like I need to tell you.

[CN: Body shaming; ageism] Carrie Fisher forever and ever. As I said on Twitter, Carrie Fisher has aged exactly as I want to age: By living. With panache.

And finally! This is just a ridiculously awesome documentation of doggy friendships. LOVE.

And Then There Were 12

image of George Pataki making a pained face in front of a large US flag, to which I've added text reading: 'But I just got my giant flag tho!'

You jerks won't have George Pataki to not even care about anymore!
George E. Pataki, the former three-term New York governor who undertook a long-shot presidential bid that failed to catch fire, withdrew from the presidential race on Tuesday, urging Republicans in a televised message to nominate another candidate who could bring the country together.

In a two-minute advertisement that aired on NBC affiliates in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, Mr. Pataki, seated before a flickering fire, announced he was suspending his campaign.

The next president must unite the country, Mr. Pataki said, "if we're truly going to make America great again," an allusion to the campaign slogan of Donald J. Trump, who Mr. Pataki has often criticized.
Yeah, that all sounds about right.

Bill Cosby to Be Charged

[Content Note: Sexual assault.]

Well, this is certainly big news:

Two people familiar with a prosecutor's decision say Bill Cosby will be charged in the investigation of an alleged sexual assault more than a decade ago.

The two people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Montgomery County prosecutors had yet to make the announcement.

It's the first criminal charges against Cosby over his conduct with women, which has received new scrutiny in the past year.

A former Temple University employee told police the comedian drugged and violated her at his home near Philadelphia. Prosecutors are set to announce the results of their investigation Wednesday morning.

A previous district attorney declined to charge Cosby in 2005.

The 78-year-old comedian previously said under oath that he had consensual sexual contact with the woman.

Prosecutors reopened the case as new evidence was unsealed in the woman's related civil case and dozens of women came forward with similar accusations.
Cosby reportedly has no comment at this time. I bet he doesn't.

The statute of limitations has run out on many of the other cases. In this case, there is a cooperating victim, still time to bring charges, a prosecutor who evidently gives a shit, and an enormous amount of public pressure, care of numerous victims who were willing to publicly tell their stories, despite the backlash they knew they would get, and have, by making allegations against a famous man. After a male comedian mentioned the existence of those allegations, which obliged people to pay attention in a way they refuse to pay attention to abused women. Extraordinary.

YES PLEASE MORE PLEASE

Care of Entertainment Weekly, and via Spinoff, here is a new image from the set of Ghostbusters, coming to OUR FACES in July of next year:

image of Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones in costume, running past an overturned and smoking firetruck

I can't wait I can't wait I can't wait!!!

In related news, there's a really great profile of Leslie Jones in the New Yorker. I especially loved this bit:
On the "Alias Smith and LeRoi" podcast, which was recorded in late 2013, Jones returned often to the topic of sexism. "You guys gotta support us," she said. "You have somebody like the dude from 'S.N.L.' say that black women are not funny? People listen to that shit."

LeRoi corrected her: "He didn't say 'funny.' He said 'ready.'"

They were referring to a recent TV Guide article noting that "S.N.L." had just hired six new cast members, five of them white men. The reporter asked Kenan Thompson, one of two black [men] on the show, why there hadn't been a black female cast member since 2007, when Maya Rudolph left. "In auditions, they just never find ones that are ready," he said.

...Around this time, Jones was at an L.A. comedy club called Inside Jokes, waiting to go onstage, when someone told her about Thompson's comment. "He should come battle me," Jones said. "Give me ten minutes and I'll ruin his life." That night, she had a strong set. After her closing joke, she said, "And they say we ain't funny, huh?," dropped the mike, and walked off to a standing ovation.

On the podcast, Jones said of Thompson's remark, "They're not 'ready'? That's bullshit. 'Cause I know I'm ready."

LeRoi, who has worked as a producer on several comedy shows, said, "'Ready' is not just the can-you-be-on-camera part. When you say 'ready,' it's, like, 'Yeah, bitch, you might have four impersonations, but can you write a fucking sketch? Yes—can you get ten sketches turned down and write an eleventh sketch?'"

Jones tried to speak.

"No, no, no—keep listening," LeRoi said.

She exhaled audibly, but let him finish mansplaining. "I have never said I would want to be on 'Saturday Night Live,'" she responded. "I don't do impressions. I don't know if I could write sketch. So, no, I would never put myself into that circle. Even if they asked me to come and audition, I'd really be, like, 'Eh, I don't know if I can do that.' But I do know women who can." Pounding a hand on the table, she added, "There's motherfuckin' three bitches I can call right now, goddammit, that will fill that spot. ...Just because you don't know them, that don't mean that they don't fucking exist. That's like saying Italy does not exist. Motherfucker, yes, it does. I've been there."
Jones, of course, was later hired as a writer on Saturday Night Live, became a featured performer, and it was during a sketch she did during "Weekend Update" that Paul Feig saw her and decided she was one of his Ghostbusters. Boom.

Another Trump rally disintegrated into violence last night, after one attendee shouted at Trump that he's a fascist and another attendee "slammed the unidentified protester onto the bleachers." At that point, a police officer arrived to break it up.

The officer escorted two protesters from the building as Trump led the crowd in chanting "U.S.A."
Trump. Led the crowd. In a "USA" chant.

I'm terrified by what's happening at his rallies, and I'm terrified by the fact that so many progressives just think it's so much hilarious entertainment.

Quote of the Day

[Content Note: Police brutality; racism. Video autoplays at second link.]

"He wants his story to get out so that people don't see him as this coldblooded killer."—Dan Herbert, defense attorney for Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke, who pleaded not guilty today to murder charges for killing 17-year-old black teenager Laquan McDonald with 16 shots.

He wants his story to get out. He needs to "catapult the propaganda" that's making people see him as a coldblooded killer, like a video recording of his killing a teenager in cold blood.

It sounds like an absurd statement, unless you understand that what Herbert really means is that Officer Van Dyke wants the narratives of white supremacy and anti-blackness and victim-blaming to congeal into a defense that turns him from a remorseless actor in another vile state-sanctioned killing to a Good Cop Who Had the Misfortune of Encountering a Black Teenage Thug Who Behaved in a Way That Obliged His Death.

That's the story that needs telling. The same old fucking story. The story that continually exonerates white cops who kill black people.
