Abortion and the Boston Bombings

[CN: Hostility to agency, terrorism.]

Q: Is there anything that some anti-choice ass can't tie to abortion?

A: No. At least not if you're Boston's archbishop Cardinal O'Malley:

After reflecting on aspects of the lives of the Tsarnaev brothers that have been reported, O’Malley said that the “individualism and alienation of our age has spawned a culture of death.” He decried actions that “have coarsened us and made us more insensitive to the pain and suffering of others,” citing abortion as “just one indication of how human life has been devalued," as well as violence in entertainment.

I'm guessing the Cardinal doesn't mean, by invoking abortion as an example of how life has been devalued, all the ways his shitty rhetoric encourages people to think of uterus-havers as less valuable than fertilized eggs, embryos, and fetusus. I'm guessing that he doesn't consider it "devaluing" human life when a person's right to control their own body is legislated away.

By the way, Cardinal O'Malley, there IS violence and terrorism tied directly to abortion. The bombing of abortion clinics, for example. Please make a note of it.

Earthquake in China: News & Relief

[Content Note: Death; injury.]

On Saturday, there was a devastating earthquake in China's Sichuan province, which has left at least 189 people dead and thousands injured. Many people are still missing. More than 17,000 people have lost their homes.

Aid and rescue teams have struggled to find survivors and provide help though 2,000 aftershocks that have cluttered roads with debris and caused landslides, making many roads unpassable via vehicle.

Here is some recommended reading:

I am having trouble finding good information about where and how to best help, although it looks like Oxfam Sichuan and One Foundation would be good options. If you have any suggestion about where to direct teaspoons, please leave them in comments.

This quake is comes five years after the quake in Sichuan which left 90,000 people dead or missing. I don't even have words to convey how profoundly sad I am for the people in this region, who are struggling through the aftermath of another devastating natural disaster so soon after the last one.

I know there are Shakers who have family in this region: I hope your families are safe.

Boston Bombing: The Latest

[Content Note: Terrorism; death; injury; self-harm.]

Here are some of the best articles I've read over the past couple of days:

David Montgomery, Sari Horwitz, and Marc Fisher in the Washington PostPolice, Citizens, and Technology Factor into Boston Bombing Probe. This is such an excellent article about the official investigation, the crucial tip from survivor Jeff Bauman, the decision to release images of the suspects, and how social media vigilantism complicated the work of law enforcement. Highly recommended reading.

FBI: 2011 Request for Information on Tamerlan Tsarnaev from Foreign Government. The foreign government has since been identified as Russia.

Pete Williams, John Schoen, and Matthew DeLuca for NBC News—Badly Wounded Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Responding to Questions: "Nearly 48 hours after he was taken into custody following an intense gun battle and manhunt, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was communicating with a special team of federal investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. He was responding to questions mostly in writing because of the throat wound, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The suspect remains in serious condition. The throat wound may be the result of a suicide attempt, investigators said."

It has been reported, but not confirmed, that D. Tsarnaev attempted to shoot himself while hiding in a boat for most of the day on Friday. It is not known whether that injury, even if self-inflicted, was in addition to any injuries sustained the previous night in the shoot-out with police that ended with his brother's death.

Laura Sullivan and Robert Siegel for NPR—Older Suspect Described As Controlling, Manipulative. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, like many domestic terrorists, had a history of domestic violence.

* * *

Although the precise motivations of the brothers are not yet known (and maybe never will be), the current narrative being written is that they were unsettled with life in the US and were having trouble navigating complex identities. Without endorsing the writing of these narratives, especially when one brother survives but has not yet been able to fully give his account, I think it's important to be aware of the emergent story being crafted about the brothers, so following are two of the better articles written in that vein:

Scott Shane in the New York TimesSuspects With Foot in Two Worlds, Perhaps Echoing Plots of Past: "As law enforcement and counterterrorism officials try to understand why Mr. Tsarnaev, 19, and his brother, Tamerlan, 26, would attack the Boston Marathon, they will have to consider a cryptic mix of national identity, ideology, religion and personality."

David Remnick in The New YorkerThe Culprits: "The Tsarnaev family had been battered by history before—by empire and the strife of displacement, by exile and emigration. Asylum in a bright new land proved little comfort. When Anzor fell sick, a few years ago, he resolved to return to the Caucasus; he could not imagine dying in America. He had travelled halfway around the world from the harrowed land of his ancestors, but something had drawn him back. The American dream wasn’t for everyone. What they could not anticipate was the abysmal fate of their sons, lives destroyed in a terror of their own making."

* * *

In other news, the AP reports that the brothers didn't have gun permits; it's unclear at this point how they got the firearms used in the Thursday night shootout with police, which left one officer dead and another wounded.

And finally: Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is already leading the charge in accusing the FBI of "dropping the ball" on T. Tsarnaev. The FBI says it did question T. Tsarnaev after Russia's request, but did not find anything that indicated at the time he was a potential threat.

I'll update as and when new information becomes available.

UPDATE 1: Ben at Think Progress reports:

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Monday that Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will not be considered an "enemy combatant" and instead will be processed through the U.S. criminal justice system.

Republicans led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have been calling on the Obama administration to designate Tsarnaev as such but Carney today put the idea to rest. "He will not be treated as an enemy combatant,” Carney said at Monday’s press briefing. “We will prosecute this terrorist through our civilian system of justice."

...Also on Monday, U.S. officials officially brought charges against Tsarnaev. ...Federal authorities charged Tsarnaev with using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death. Read the complaint here. [pdf]

West, TX: The Latest

[Content Note: Injury; death.]

The explosion of a fertilizer plant in West, TX, last week took 14 lives, most of whom were first responders who were battling a fire before the explosion. Some EMTs are still missing. The search and rescue in the town, where hundreds were injured, continues.

President Obama has pledged federal assistance, and lots of donations are rolling in to help the town. Here is a good round-up of ways to help, and please feel welcome and encouraged to leave additional suggestions in comments.

The precise cause of the explosion is still unknown, and the investigation is only in its most preliminary stages. Foul play is not suspected, but it has not been ruled out yet, either.

As the questions begin about how this terrible thing could have happened, some possible answers are starting to emerge: The plant had been storing "1,350 times the amount of ammonium nitrate that would normally trigger safety oversight by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Yet a person familiar with DHS operations said the company that owns the plant, West Fertilizer, did not tell the agency about the potentially explosive fertilizer as it is required to do, leaving one of the principal regulators of ammonium nitrate—which can also be used in bomb making—unaware of any danger there."

The last time the plant had an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspection was 1985 (!), and because OSHA and the Chemical Safety Board are so wildly underfunded and understaffed, companies are tasked with self-reporting. Whoops.

Which of course is to say nothing of the zoning laws that allowed a fertilizer plant to exist in such close proximity to residences and schools. Many residents say they saw it coming, and, naturally, because we live in a garbage culture full of victim-blaming and tasking individuals with solutions for systemic problems, there is already a lot of "why didn't they move?" where "this plant was irresponsible and deregulation is a fucking nightmare" should be.

Anyway. That's the latest. My sincerest condolences to the people of West, Texas.

Tom Hardy and a Puppy Visit Hawaii

image of actor Tom Hardy and a grey pit bull puppy licking its nose, standing on a Hawaiian beach with a rainbow arcing across the sky above them

"Tom," said the puppy, licking its nose, "can I ask you something?" And Tom said, "Of course you can." And the puppy asked, "Do you ever feel like you don't fit in?" And Tom said, "Sometimes I do. I think everyone feels that way at least sometimes, puppy." And the puppy sighed with relief and said, "Good. I mean, not good that everyone feels that way, but that I'm not alone." And Tom said, "No, you're not alone." And the puppy said, "Tom? Do you think it's strange that I take comfort from the fact that everyone feels that way, at least some of the time?" And Tom said, "No, puppy. I don't think that's strange. It's one of the most curious but also one of the most beautiful parts of existence that we can find a sense of community in a shared sense of alienation. The trick, I think, is finding people and puppies who share your island, you know?" And the puppy said, "Yeah. I'm glad you're on my island, Tom." And Tom said, "I'm glad you're on my island, too, puppy."

West, TX Explosion Update

[Content Note: Death; injury.]

Background here.

There are now 12 confirmed deaths in the fertilizer plant explosion in West, TX. Among the dead is an off-duty Dallas fire captain, who lived in West, Kenny Harris. He was assisting the local volunteer fire department when he was killed.

There are 200 people with injuries, and searchers are still continuing to look for survivors. Or people who did not survive.

Country singer Willie Nelson has announced he will donate proceeds from his upcoming 80th birthday concert to the residents of West. "West is just a few miles from my hometown of Abbott. I was born and raised here and it was my backyard growing up. This is my community. These friends and neighbors have always been and are still a part of my life. My heart is praying for the community that we call home."

Boston Marathon Bombing Open Thread

[Content Note: Violence; terrorism.]

A lot has happened in Boston overnight. The two suspects were identified as brothers: Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. They have been in the US for at least a couple of years. Earlier reports were that they are Chechnyan, or Russian from near the Chechnyan border; their uncle just said in a press conference that they spent their early life in Kyrgyzstan.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev is dead, after a shoot-out with police. He was shot and had wounds from an explosion; it is thought he may have detonated a suicide vest he was wearing. An explosive trigger was reportedly found on his body at the morgue. (Some background on him here.)

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is still at large, and police and feds are surrounding his residence in Boston. He is considered armed and dangerous and may also be wearing a suicide vest.

An MIT police officer was killed last night, before the brothers carjacked an SUV and went on the run, with police in pursuit. An MBTA Transit Police officer was wounded.

This is a good summary of events overnight.

Right now, I want to underline that these brothers have lived in the US for some time; they have family here and attended school here. It's not a simple foreign/domestic terrorism distinction, especially without any information on their motivation(s). We have no idea at this point how they view(ed) themselves or how they self-identify. Their perception of their relationship to the US matters; this can't be just externally defined by onlookers.

Andrew Rice: "So looks like Boston terrorists were both foreign-born Muslims and alienated American youths with too-easy access to arms."

No simple narratives.

I'll update as additional information becomes available.

UPDATE 1: Jeff Bauman, images of whom were widely circulated after he lost his legs in the bombing, helped identify the suspects:

"He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, 'bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,'" Chris Bauman said yesterday in an interview.

...While still in intensive care, Bauman gave the FBI a description of the man he saw, his brother said. Bauman's information helped investigators narrow down whom to look for in hours of video of the attack, he said.
That guy. I am in absolute awe.

UPDATE 2: Former classmates of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are surprised and betrayed. He was not a loner. Which doesn't mean he didn't nonetheless feel isolated. Again: No simple narratives.

UPDATE 3: During this intensely sad interview, in which he's informed one of his nephews has been killed and tries to process the enormity of what they've done, the Tsarnaevs' uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, says the brothers came to the US as war refugees.

UPDATE 4: I am not passing along anything that purports to be social media posts, videos, etc. created by the Tsarnaevs. Much of it will turn out to be wrong. I also urge everyone to be skeptical about that stuff at the moment. It is far too easy to create fake accounts or misidentify content creators. What will be informative will still be informative once there is time to verify.

UPDATE 5: Intense police activity in Watertown again. Reporters are being pushed back by police. The cops look so calm. I'm remembering asking my granddad (NYPD) if cops got scared. "Yes, we get scared. But we try not to show it."

UPDATE 6: During an interview with MSNBC, one of their uncles says that "being losers" was behind his nephews' actions. "Of course we're ashamed!" he exclaims. "He put a shame on our family. He put a shame on the entire Chechen ethnicity." And: "Somebody radicalized them, but it was not my brother. He spent his life bringing bread to the table."

UPDATE 7: The Tsarnaev brothers were naturalized US citizens by way of asylum. I have a lot of feelings about that. None of them are "we should reconsider asylum." Offering asylum to war refugees is one of the best things the US does. My opinion on that has not changed and will not change, even despite my anger that someone offered asylum from harm would then commit such a heinous act here.

UPDATE 8: Actor Bradley Cooper, who stars almost exclusively in shitty movies but seems like a pretty nice guy in real life, visits Jeff Bauman in the hospital, along with Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. And Bauman, giving a thumbs-up in the picture, continues to be awesome.

UPDATE 9: The Othering narratives I'm hearing on CNN & MSNBC are contemptible. Anything to create distance. Anything to make it "us" vs. "them." We don't even yet know their motivations, but we're sure that it has nothing to do with "us"! I am practicing patience.

UPDATE 10: A doctor's interesting and sad account of trying to revive Tamerlan Tsarnaev after he was brought to the hospital last night.

UPDATE 11: Jeff Bauman reportedly has no health insurance. (And, even if he does, as we all know, health insurance does not cover everything. He will still be facing extraordinary bills.) If you'd like to donate to help cover the cost of his medical expenses, go here. Thanks to Shaker adamW for sharing the link in comments.

UPDATE 12: A man presumed to be Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is hiding in a boat in a backyard in Watertown, surrounded by law enforcement. He is reportedly bleeding, and is suspected of being armed with explosives. Things are moving quickly at the moment: I will continue updates in comments, and I will make an attempt to report only that which has been verified.

UPDATE 13: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is alive and in custody and being taken to a medic.
