National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers

[Content Note: Violence]

Tomorrow, March 10th, is National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. It was named such following the assassination of Dr. David Gunn in 1996.

Dr. Gunn was murdered in 1993.
In 1993, Dr. Tiller was shot but not killed.
In 1994, Dr. John Bayard Britton and his escort, James H. Barrett, were assassinated.
In 1994, Dr. Garson Romalis was shot but not killed.
In 1995, Dr. Hugh Short was shot and killed.
In 1997, Dr. Jack Fainman was shot but not killed, the shooter was a suspect in an unnamed NY physician's murder
In 1998, Dr. Barnett Slepian is shot and killed. His murderer, James Koop, was the suspect in 1997's shooting of Dr. Fainman and the other unnamed doctor.
In 2009, Dr. Tiller was shot, again, and killed.

In 1994, Shannon Lowney and Leanne Nichols were shot and killed at clinics in MA.
In 1998, Officer Robert Sanderson was killed during a clinic bombing and nurse Emily Lyon was severely injured.

Assassination and attempted murder are only two of the dangers doctors and others who work at clinics that provide abortion services. They also face arson and bombing, butyric acid attacks, and anthrax attacks. And: harassment, intimidation, hate mail, and stalking.

The National Abortion Federation has kept a record of violence (.pdf). From 1977 to 2011, there have been:

218 arsons and bombings (1 each in 2011)
99 attempted arson or bombing (1 in 2011)
656 bomb threats (1 in 2011 -- 12 in 2010)
191 incidents of assault and battery (3 in 2011)
420 death threats (2 in 2011)
4 kidnappings (none in 2011)
15,062 incidents of hate mail or hate phone calls (365 in 2011)

There are several more categories. NAF also notes:

All numbers represent incidents reported to or obtained by NAF. Actual incidents are likely much higher. Tabulation of trespassing began in 1999 and tabulation of email harassment and hoax devices began in 2002.

1. Incidents recorded are those classified as such by the appropriate law enforcement agency. Incidents that were ruled inconclusive or accidental are not included.

2. Stalking is defined as the persistent following, threatening, and harassing of an abortion provider, staff member, or patient away from the clinic. Tabulation of stalking incidents began in 1993.

3. The "number of arrests" represents the total number of arrests, not the total number of persons arrested. Many blockaders are arrested multiple times.
There aren't many careers that would require someone to deal with sometimes constant threats, harassment, and violence. And deal with having the job itself being constantly under attack because of government intrusion and asshattery.

There are very few careers in which one must face things like this (from January of this year, btw):
Operation Rescue, an extremist anti-abortion group, has launched a website - abortiondocs.org - which lists the photographs and addresses of abortion providers, as well as maps to find their places of business. The website, which describes itself as the "largest collection of documents on America's abortion cartel," aims to list every abortion provider in the country.
Often at risk to themselves, abortion providers--the doctors, nurse practitioners, midwives, nurses, medical assistants, office support staff, escorts & volunteers--protect the lives and health of people by providing them with necessary medical care.

To everyone who does walk that path:

THANK YOU.

Leslie tries on tight pants reading 'nympho' across the butt and tries to check it out over her shoulder, while Ben looks on curiously

"Ohhhh, it says 'nympho' on the butt in silver sparkly letters. Nympho means you're addicted to sex. And, since it's on the butt, there are other implications as well. So those are a maybe."—Tom.

OMG THIS SHOW!!! Here are my favorite lines from last night's episode [content note: reference to violence]:

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Andy: And if there's one thing I know is my fantastic, it's talk.

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Buddy Wood: We're setting up over there. We found a small piece of carpet without a horrifying smellscape.

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Andy: We'll let you pay for your own food—because of equality!

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Ron: I don't consider myself an anything-ist, but my life has been shaped by powerful women. My father once told my mother than woman was made from the rib of Adam, and my mom broke his jaw.

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Leslie: Preposterous! Are you ineb—hiccup!—ebirated? That was bad timing.

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Ron: Kendra, you know what? I am gonna have that third steak after all. Go ahead and put that order in now, please and thank you.

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Andy: You and the women taught me that nothing is impossible.

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Leslie: I know what tiramisu is, okay, and sheep don't eat it!

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Jerry: Well, you know, it's like I always say—it ain't government work if you don't have to do it twice! Here I go!

Ron Swanson head bullet-point Ron: April! Andrew! Good morning to you both! Doughnuts! Go nuts! *giggle*

Also loved: That when Ron told Chris he'd had sex with Linda, he described it as "consensual activities." I was trying to think of the last time I heard a male character on a sitcom use the word "consent" that wasn't part of a rape joke about the lack thereof, and I'm pretty sure it was never.

And this:

two workers at the airport give each other a knowing look

I am not gonna lie: I got totes choked up when those two guys gave each other that look, like "OH HELL NO IS THAT ASSHOLE MESSING WITH LESLIE." I love that they had her back, because she'd had theirs, just doing something simple but meaningful for them like fighting for better ID tags. The episode was about "luck," but over and over, we saw that what looks like luck is really just Leslie's kindness and competency coming back to her in ways she can't see. It was so sweet. Wow, I love this show.

Finally: Ann and Tom, please just stay broken up now. Thanks.

A Personhood Amendment, for Ladies

Shaker ma_am recently suggested, in response to the onslaught of anti-choice legislation that includes encroachments on reproductive rights that undermine the autonomy of women and other people with uteri as well as proposed "Personhood Amendments" to confer personhood on fetuses, that we need a Personhood Amendment for women and other people with uteri to establish our rights as autonomous people. I suggested we compose the amendment, and then try to get a clever Democratic Senator to introduce it into the US Senate.

So we did!

And then we composed a petition, and ma_am launched it at Change.org.

Here is our prosed Personhood Amendment:

A person identifying as a woman and/or having a uterus shall retain all of the full, basic, and fundamental rights of a US citizen as guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Congress and the States shall make no law that infringes upon a person's life, including but not limited to access to life-saving or life-improving healthcare, and/or medicines and procedures deemed necessary or beneficial by a medical professional and/or by the person having the uterus, procurement of which shall not by denied in and of itself by the presence of a uterus. Congress and the States shall make no law that infringes upon a person's liberty, including but not limited to autonomy over hir own body and the ability to make decisions regarding hir own healthcare. Congress and the States shall make no law that interferes with a person's pursuit of happiness, including but not limited to access to a full spectrum of reproductive options, freedom from forcible reproduction, and the ability to make decisions regarding family planning and family resources.

Please sign the petition in support of the Personhood Amendment here. Once it has 1,000 signatures, it will be delivered to Senators Patty Murray (WA), Al Franken (MN), and Kristen Gillibrand (NY) with a request to introduce the proposed amendment into the legislative session.

And please spread the word about the petition via social networking sites. Let's change this conversation. It's time to change "women's rights are human rights" from a radical statement to settled fact.

Primarily Dreadful

an old-timey picture of four men sitting around a car, whose faces have been replaced by the candidates'; it is labeled Robber Barons Class of 2012.

On a scale of one to one million, how excited do you continue to be about the Republican Primary? A MILLION?! That's what I thought you'd say!

This morning, I'll start by giving the Mitt Romney campaign the Famous Last Words Award: Romney campaign says losing nomination would take 'act of God'. Uh-oh ha ha! "Are you listening, God? It's me, Mitt Romney. I am eager to tempt fate AND I just got my period!"

In other Mitt Romney news, Mitt Romney continues to be Mitt Romney. By which I mean, the least barfiest of all the candidates, thus underlining what a truly shitsational field it is, because whooooooooaaa is Mitt Romney a garbage candidate!

He's so terrible that Michael Scherer estimates he's spending $17.14 per vote! That is A LOT per vote! Good thing the Romneys are only poor in spirit and filthy stinking rich in wallet.

I'm also not sure that Mitt Romney is aware he's campaigning as a REPUBLICAN in the United States of AMERICA, because he is saying a lot of THINGS that do not resonate well with conservative voters in this COUNTRY. Like referring to Southern states as an "away game." HA HA THAT IS VERY TRUE! Mitt Romney's home field is Effete Northerner Stadium. He co-owns it with Mr. Bain T. Capital. They play SO MUCH lacrosse there!

Perhaps realizing that it was a bad idea to directly acknowledge he is a yankee doodle dipshit who doesn't set foot in the South except when his presidential ambitions require him to, Mitt Romney tried to recover by pulling a Mitt Romney and claiming to be an "unofficial" Southerner: "I am learning to say y'all and I like grits, and things. Strange things are happening to me!"

image of Romney counting on his fingers to which I have added text reading: 'Let me count all the ways in which I'm totally an unofficial Southerner: 1. I like grits, and things, 2. I have friends who own NASCAR teams, 3. I drive a truck, and like 200 other cars, 4. I say y'all ALL the time, 5. I own a pair of alligator shoes, which I bet came from your lovely swamps, 6. Did I mention that I like grits, and things...?'

Don't worry about Mitt Romney, though! He also said this week: "It would be popular for me to stand up and say I'm going to give you government money to pay for your college, but I'm not going to promise that. Don't just go to one that has the highest price. Go to one that has a little lower price where you can get a good education. And hopefully you'll find that. And don't expect the government to forgive the debt that you take on." Which was received with "sustained applause" from the crowd at a high-tech metals assembly factory in Ohio to whom he was speaking.

Nothing wins over Republican voters like showing them a fancy new pair of bootstraps they can't afford!

In other candidate news, Newt Gingrich is a human being who is running for president.

Ron Paul's candidacy is a house of Facebook friends stacked on an illusion inside a mirror, or something.

And Rick Santorum will not call Mitt Romney a liar, but he WILL call him "serially" untruthful about his record, which he "deliberately misrepresents."

RICK SANTORUM FUN FACT! Rick Santorum's favorite book after THE BIBLE is the thesaurus.

Talk about these things! Or don't. Whatever makes you happy. Life is short.

We've done this one before, but not for a long while: What is your favorite feminist song and/or album of all time?

(Also welcome: General recommendations about feminist artists/bands.)

For me, it rarely gets better than Nina Simone declaring: "I got my hair, on my head / My brains, my ears / My eyes, nose, and my mouth / I got my smile / I got my tongue, my chin / My neck, my boobies / My heart, my soul, and my back / I got my sex / I got my arms, my hands / My fingers, my legs / My feet, my toes, and my liver / Got my blood / I got life."

President's Statement on International Women's Day

Just received in my inbox...

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
____________________________________________________________
For Immediate Release                                                                                 March 8, 2012

Statement by the President on International Women's Day

On International Women's Day, the United States celebrates the many achievements and milestones in the ongoing struggle for gender equality around the world, and reaffirms our commitment to accelerating progress. We are committed to a future in which our daughters and sons have equal opportunities to thrive, because when women succeed, communities and countries succeed. With this promise in mind, we are launching new initiatives on women's political participation and economic empowerment, combating violence against women, promoting women's roles and perspectives in conflict prevention and peace-building, and supporting the work of UN Women and other key partners.

Experience shows that true democracy cannot be built without the full and equal participation of half our population. Women's economic empowerment is essential for economic recovery and growth worldwide. Successful transitions in the Middle East and North Africa will depend on women's ability to shape their countries' futures. From Egypt to Yemen and beyond, over the last year we have seen women lead local and national efforts to protest corruption, demand accountability, and establish new institutions.

The United States also recognizes the need to elevate the perspectives of particularly marginalized women worldwide, including refugees and displaced persons, ethnic and religious minorities and women with disabilities. On this day, and every day, we stand with the women and men who bravely champion dignity, freedom, and opportunity for all.

What I'm Listening To

Lesley Gore performs "You Don't Own Me" on the T.A.M.I. Show in 1964, ten years before I was born, and it still sounds radical 48 years later.

You don't own me / I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me / Don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do / And don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you / Don't put me on display

'Cause you don't own me / Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me / Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay

Oh, I don't tell you what to say / I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself / That's all I ask of you

I'm young and I love to be young / I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want / To say and do whatever I please

Quote of the Day

"If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights once and for all."—Then-First Lady and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, at the United Nations 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session in Beijing, September 1995.

Seventeen years later, it's still radical.

[Content Note for violent misogyny.]

Even today, there are those who are trying to silence our words. But the voices of this conference and of the women at Huairou must be heard loudly and clearly:

It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food, or drowned, or suffocated, or their spines broken, simply because they are born girls.

It is a violation of human rights when women and girls are sold into the slavery of prostitution for human greed -- and the kinds of reasons that are used to justify this practice should no longer be tolerated.

It is a violation of human rights when women are doused with gasoline, set on fire, and burned to death because their marriage dowries are deemed too small.

It is a violation of human rights when individual women are raped in their own communities and when thousands of women are subjected to rape as a tactic or prize of war.

It is a violation of human rights when a leading cause of death worldwide among women ages 14 to 44 is the violence they are subjected to in their own homes by their own relatives.

It is a violation of human rights when young girls are brutalized by the painful and degrading practice of genital mutilation.

It is a violation of human rights when women are denied the right to plan their own families, and that includes being forced to have abortions or being sterilized against their will.

If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights once and for all.

Let us not forget that among those rights are the right to speak freely -- and the right to be heard.

The GOP War on Unions Uteri Everything, Georgia Edition

[Content note: This post contains discussion of anti-union measures, infringements on reproductive rights, anti-immigrant legislation, anti-poor legislation, and drug testing.]

Is Georgia jealous of Indiana getting all the attention from Liss for being a "conservative legislation lab"? Looks like it. Because in the last few days, the Georgia Senate skipped building a bridge and constructed a freaking transporter to the 19th century.

So suck it, Hoosier State! Georgia is catching up in the GOP War on...

Unions: SB 469 limits "mass picketing outside private residences and fine[s] individuals $1,000 a day -- and organizations as much as $10,000 as day -- if they ignore court orders to stop their protests." This bill, clear retaliation for February protests outside AT&T HQ, makes many non-violent protests a felony. Way to celebrate MLK's birthplace, Georgia GOP! Not surprisingly, Martin Luther King III protested the bill, noting that the measure would have criminalized the entire civil rights movement.

Uteri: Female Senators walked out in protest over two bills restricting reproductive health access. SB 438 prevents the insurance plans for state employees from covering abortion. SB 460 exempts religiously-affiliated employers from covering contraception--despite the fact that a 1999 Georgia law already mandates contraception coverage. I especially love (hint: I do NOT love) that this combination of bills manages to hit uteri-bearers who are public AND private sector employees! Way to cover all the bases, GOP!

Unemployed and Low-Income People: If you need public assistance, there's nothing like a little mandatory drug testing to help you get back on your feet, says the GOP. Georgia's Senate voted last week to follow Florida in requiring TANF applicants to pay for their own drug tests; if they pass, recipients will be reimbursed, but if they fail, they will be ineligible for benefits. This bill was joined this week by another that mandates "personal growth" activities for those who receive public assistance. Apparently, in a state with a 9.2 % unemployment rate, mandatory "self-development" classes are all that's needed to get people off of public assistance. Because education is great! Unless, of course, you are one of those...

Undocumented Immigrants: SB 458 bars undocumented immigrants from attending Georgia's 60 public colleges and universities. As if that wasn't neat enough:

Monday's 34-19 vote makes SB 458 the biggest measure concerning illegal immigration to advance in this legislative session. It follows up on House Bill 87, a sweeping piece of legislation that Gov. Nathan Deal signed into law last year and is considered one of the toughest laws passed by a state legislature in recent years targeting illegal immigration. Parts of that law are now being reviewed by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Whoooops your legal problems! I eagerly await the GOP's defense of these crappy laws as "job bills," since they create so many opportunities for lawyers.

These bills will now go to the GOP-dominated House for consideration. If you are a Georgia resident and wish to contact your Representative, you can find hir here. A public protest specifically concerning women's health issues called "Walk In My Shoes" will be held Monday; if this is of interest to you, details can be found here. Feel free to leave information about other protests, including social media campaigns, in comments.

Only one more page of sycophantic gushing to go, and then it's onto the sagacious words of the man himself!

By the way, I always love people who wax admiringly about some rich fuck who treats the help like they're human beings for five seconds, without a trace of irony that singling out basic kindness toward working people necessarily implies they don't deserve to be treated as equals, "but Mr. Magnanimous Fancypants is nice to them ANYWAY!" Oh, bravo. You're a real humanitarian.
