More "Suspicious Packages" Sent to Clintons, Obamas, and Possibly Others

[Content Note: Bombs; threats of violence; terrorism.]

The Clintons and the Obamas have reportedly received suspicious packages similar to the one received by George Soros, which turned out to be an explosive device.

I had a few thoughts on Twitter:

It's also important to note that Trump didn't put targets on their backs. Soros, the Obamas, and the Clintons have been targeted by conservative extremists using campaigns rife with eliminationist language for decades (in the Clintons' case). Trump just exploited and amplified that existing hatred.

* * *

There are reports that a similar package was sent to CNN headquarters, which has been evacuated. It is thought to be related to the devices sent to Soros, the Obamas, and the Clintons.

Additionally, there is a report that another one was intercepted on its way to the White House. As of this writing, I have not seen any confirmation that package is thought to be similar or related. Which doesn't mean it isn't; I just haven't read that, unlike the others.

Naturally, the report that a package, related or otherwise, has been sent to the White House, too, is underwriting arguments that Trump bears no accountability. Whoooooooops that is not how it works.

As evidenced by the long history of dictators done in by the very violence that they endorsed and used to oppress.

Even if Trump is a target, he is not absolved of his own responsibility in creating the environment in which this is happening.

People get hurt when dehumanization and eliminationism become normalized. That's why decent people don't do that.

* * *

UPDATE: Reuters is now reporting "that there was no suspicious package addressed to the White House."

So, the only related "suspicious packages" have gone to: George Soros, the Clintons, the Obamas, and CNN. All routine and sustained targets of Trump's incendiary rhetoric.

UPDATE 2: Another "suspicious package" has been sent to a Florida office building where the office of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is located. The building has been evacuated. No details at the moment whether this package is considered similar and related to the others.

UPDATE 3: CNN's Jake Tapper reports: "The package with an explosive device sent to CNN's NY offices today was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, according to city and local law enforcement officials." Brennan has been a frequent critic of the Trump Regime, and Donald Trump revoked his security clearance in August.

UPDATE 4: A suspicious package has been found outside a California building in which Sen. Kamala Harris' office is located. The building has been evacuated.

UPDATE 5: Law enforcement officials have told NBC that the return address name on the packages sent to Soros, the Clintons, and the Obamas is "Debbie Wasserman Schultz." Which, in addition to trying to blame DWS of harming fellow Democrats, also suggests that the package sent to her office is indeed related.

UPDATE 6: A suspicious package was intercepted on its way to former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, too.

UPDATE 7: The package intended for Holder (or perhaps a second package) was apparently the package that arrived at Debbie Wasserman Schultz's office — because, as mentioned in Update 5, her name and address were used as the sender's info. Holder's address was incorrect, so it was "returned to sender."

So, suspicious packages have been sent to: George Soros, the Clintons, the Obamas, John Brennan, Kamala Harris, and Eric Holder, with Debbie Wasserman Schultz's information used to implicate her.

UPDATE 8: Law enforcement has cleared the package reported at the building in which Senator Kamala Harris' office is located. Tom Winter at NBC News: "Per a statement from Sen. Kamala Harris' office and local police there is NO suspicious package at the Senator's office in San Diego and the item police did check out was not addressed to her and was found to not be a device of any kind."

UPDATE 9: Another package was sent to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo: "Feds wouldn't disclose during the press conferences exactly what was in the package, but said 'it was consistent with the other packages.'"

UPDATE 10: Tara Palmeri at ABC News: "Suspicious package intercepted by Capitol Hill police was addressed to Democratic California congresswoman Maxine Waters, according to three sources."

UPDATE 11: Law enforcement has cleared the package sent to Cuomo. Via the New York Post: "'A device has been sent to my office in Manhattan, which we were just informed about,' Cuomo said at a press conference outside CNN's Columbus Circle headquarters. But police later said his office didn't receive a bomb — it was actually an envelope that said 'From Proud Boys' and contained the thumb drive inside."

It sounds to me like the Proud Boys (or someone pretending to be the Proud Boys) exploited what is happening to try to intimidate Cuomo, who recently ordered state police to investigate the Proud Boys, a patriarchal, white supremacist group.

The Obamas, Y'all

Hey, remember when I first wrote about President Obama and his $400,000 speaking fee (parts two, three, four), and I said: "I guess I'd be more concerned about President Obama...earning a $400,000 speaking fee if I weren't keenly aware that he—like Hillary Clinton, also criticized for drawing big speaking fees—uses his personal wealth to help people."?

Welp: Barack and Michelle Obama to Donate $2 million to Chicago Youth Jobs.

"One of the things that we will be starting this year is Michelle and I, personally, are going to donate $2 million to our summer jobs programs here in the community, so that right away young people can get to work, and we can start providing opportunities to all of them," Obama said [during a recent event at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago].

"We'll be working with the city, we'll be working with the county, we'll be working with businesses because part of what we want to do is reach young people who might be at risk if they don't have something to do during the summers," Obama continued. "But part of what we also want to do is to reach older youth who may be prepared for apprenticeships because one of the things that this project is going to do is generate jobs."
Normally, I'd be a little more eloquent in my commentary toward the people who couldn't shut up about How Terrible it is that Obama was accepting money from Wall Street, but it's been a long week, so all I got is: Fuck you.

The Audacity of Hope

First Lady Michelle Obama gave her final address as the nation's first lady today, and, during her remarks, she spoke about the power of hope.

And when you encounter obstacles — because I guarantee you, you will; and many of you already have — when you are struggling, and you start thinking about giving up, I want you to remember something that my husband and I have talked about since we first started this journey nearly a decade ago, something that has carried us through every moment in this White House and every moment of our lives, and that is the power of hope — the belief that something better is always possible if you're willing to work for it and fight for it.

It is our fundamental belief in the power of hope that has allowed us to rise above the voices of doubt and division, of anger and fear, that we have faced in our own lives and in the life of this country. Our hope that, if we work hard enough and believe in ourselves, then we can be whatever we dream, regardless of the limitations that others may place on us. The hope that, when people see us for who we truly are, maybe, just maybe, they, too, will be inspired to rise to their best possible selves.
This, of course, is aspirational. There is no guarantee of something better just through sheer will and tenacity. But that's not what she's saying. She's saying that hope must, especially in times of despair, underwrite the hard work and indubitability that progress requires.

Hope is what keeps demoralization at bay. And, in this moment, that is a very important message indeed.

It is certainly one I need to hear.

Thank you, FLOTUS.

Hillary & Michelle: On the Campaign Trail Together!

In about a half hour or so, First Lady Michelle Obama will join Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail in North Carolina! Squeeeeee! Consider this an open thread for discussion, if you're able to watch their joint event live.

C-SPAN will livestream the event.

The embedded video below should be a livestream once the event begins. I will try to find a replacement if it's not working once the event starts.

I See What You're Doing, Donald Trump

[Content Note: Misogyny; racism.]

Donald Trump went off on Michelle Obama today, in a very particular way, and I am incandescently angry about it. I've got a new piece at Shareblue deconstructing exactly what he's up to:

Trump is mischaracterizing the First Lady's eight-year-old words, and in a very particular and pernicious way.

He is attempting to create a rift in what has been seen as a profoundly inspiring political partnership between two of the most prominent and admired women in the nation, who are strongly allied on the subject of women's empowerment and eradicating gender bias.

And who are united in condemning his attitudes and behavior toward women, and united in trying to defeat him.

So he is attempting to drive a wedge between them, and subvert the unified passion so many women across the nation have for the work Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton are doing together on our behalf.

This is an age-old disruptive strategy used by anti-feminist men, particularly white men who are unnerved by seeing alliances between Black and non-Black feminists.

Trump further suggests that his mischaracterization of Obama's words give him license to personally attack Clinton.

This is an ugly, despicable thing he's said — part of a long, ugly, despicable history of dividing to conquer feminist women.
There is more at the link, including video, with a complete transcript, of what he said.

The way this will get reported is that he's just being his usual bullying self, this time with the First Lady in his target. But it's much more sinister than that. And he knows it, even if most of the people listening to him don't.

[Content Note: Sexual assault] A fifteenth woman has come forward to speak out about being sexually assaulted by Donald Trump: "It was a story Cathy Heller had told many friends and family members over the years, but is only now telling in public. Some 20 years ago, she claims, when she met Donald Trump for the first and only time, he grabbed her, went for a kiss, and grew angry with her as she twisted away. 'Oh, come on,' she alleges that he barked, before holding her firmly in place and planting his lips on hers. It is exactly what Trump claimed, in the most recent presidential debate, that he did not do. And so Heller has added her voice to a chorus of women now accusing Trump of unwanted behavior. 'He can't claim we're all liars,' Heller said."

[CN: Sexual assault] Excellent point: "MGM, NBC, and The Apprentice producer Mark Burnett have been using what may be shaky legal arguments to protect Donald Trump from the release of tapes many say further reveal racist and misogynistic attitudes of the GOP's presidential nominee. Now it turns out they will relaunch the show in January with a new host, former California Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has also been accused of allegedly groping women on 'movie sets, in studios, and in other settings.'"

Michelle Obama Delivers Another Stunning Speech

[Content Note: Sexual assault.]

First Lady Michelle Obama gave an exquisite speech in New Hampshire today. The whole thing was amazing, and I've got a piece at Shareblue with an additional excerpt, but this powerful section in particular brought me to tears:

And to make matters worse, it now seems very clear that this isn't an isolated incident. It's one of countless examples of how he has treated women his whole life. And I have to tell you that I listen to all of this, and I feel it so personally. And I'm sure that many of you do, too, particularly the women. The shameful comments about our bodies. The disrespect of our ambitions and intellect. The belief that you can do anything you want to a woman. It is cruel. It's frightening. And the truth is, it hurts. It hurts.

It's like that sick, sinking feeling you get when you're walking down the street, minding your own business, and some guy yells out vulgar words about your body. Or when you see that guy at work that stands just a little too close, stares a little too long, and makes you feel uncomfortable in your own skin. It's that feeling of terror and violation that too many women have felt when someone has grabbed them, or forced himself on them and they've said no, but he didn't listen. Something that we know happens on college campuses and countless other places every single day.

It reminds us of stories we heard from our mothers and grandmothers about how, back in their day, the boss could say and do whatever he pleased to the women in the office, and, even though they worked so hard, jumped over every hurdle to prove themselves, it was never enough. We thought all of that was ancient history, didn't we?

And so many have worked for so many years to end this kind of violence and abuse and disrespect, but here we are. Two thousand and sixteen. And we're hearing these exact same things every day on the campaign trail. We are drowning in it.

And all of us are doing what women have always done: We're trying to keep our heads above water. Just trying to get through it. Trying to pretend like this doesn't really bother us. Maybe because we think that admitting how much it hurts makes us as women look weak. Maybe we're afraid to be that vulnerable. Maybe we've grown accustomed to swallowing these emotions and staying quiet, because we've seen that people often won't take our word over his. Or maybe we don't want to believe that there are still people out there who think so little of us as women.

Too many are treating this as just another day's headline; as if our outrage is overblown or unwarranted; as if this is normal, just politics as usual. But New Hampshire, be clear: This is not normal. This is not politics as usual. This is disgraceful. It is intolerable. And it doesn't matter what party you belong to—Democrat, Republican, Independent—no woman deserves to be treated this way; none of us deserves this kind of abuse.

And I know it's a campaign, but this isn't about politics. It's about basic human decency. It's about right and wrong. And we simply cannot endure this, or expose our children to this any longer, not for another minute and let alone for four years. Now is the time for all of us to stand up and say: Enough is enough. This has got to stop right now.
The other part that really did me in was when she talked about what a great role model Hillary Clinton is, because she embodies admirable values. (That clip is at Shareblue.)

Enough is enough. This shit hurts. And it may feel like it's normal, but it isn't. It doesn't have to be. We can reject it. We must.

Michelle Obama hit the campaign trail for Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia and was typically awesome. She also appears in a new Clinton ad.

[CN: Queerphobia] Meanwhile, Clinton campaigned in North Carolina, where she sharply criticized HB2: "Think about everything that's at stake in this election. And here's what is also true—and I want you all to think about this—Hillary is one of the few people on this entire planet, and clearly the only person in this race, who has any idea what this job entails; who has seen it from every angle. Hear me: The staggering stakes; the brutal hours; the overwhelming stresses. [chuckles] And here's the thing: She still wants to take it on! Republican Convention Day One Wrap-Up!

[Content Note: Bigotry; sexual harassment; theft.]

HOO BOY that was quite a day of turgid garbage!

I did some live-tweeting of the primetime trash parade, and I've Storified those tweets for anyone who wants to read them.

For anyone who didn't tune into ONE MILLION SOLID HOURS of Republican nightmare conventioning, here's my Executive Summary: BROWN PEOPLE ARE SCARY! HILLARY IS A MONSTER! DONALD TRUMP IS A TREMENDOUS AND CLASSY LEADER! AMERICA HAS BECOME A BIG TURD BUT IS ALSO THE BEST! USA! USA! TAKE HILLARY TO JAIL! YEAHHHH!

In other news: Chris Christie is the Commandant of Creeptown.

And finally! It looks like Melania Trump straight-up plagiarized a Michelle Obama speech. Not just any speech, either: Her 2008 Democratic Convention Speech. Her famous "One Nation" speech. And it was a section about passing on good values to your kids. LOL. You can't make this shit up.

Michelle Obama: "Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: That you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don't agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and to pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children—and all children in this nation—to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

Melania Trump: "From a young age my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your work is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son, and we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

Welp.

UPDATE: And, naturally, the Trump campaign not only refuses to acknowledge the theft, but blames Hillary Clinton for trying to attack Melania:

"There's no cribbing of Michelle Obama's speech. These were common words and values, that she cares about her family, things like that," said Mr. Manafort. "I mean, she was speaking in front of 35 million people last night. She knew that. To think that she would be cribbing Michelle Obama's words is crazy."

He added, "This is once again an example of when a woman threatens Hillary Clinton, how she seeks out to demean her and take her down."
He also said: "We're talking about words like compassion, love of family, respect. These are not words that are unique words, that belong to the Obamas." Unreal.

On the one hand, she's being yelled at for being disrespectful, and, on the other, she's being praised for showing that headscarves are stupid and terrible blah blah. But neither is accurate. Ideally, women everywhere should have unilateral choice on what they want to wear, and the First Lady made the perfect commentary on that by choosing to forego a headscarf, without making an explicit political statement about it. What has happened to our culture? What's happened is we have lost our landmarks. When we reject the Bible as the objective word of truth, when we say that the Bible is no longer the standard by which we live and we make it whatever we feel, what we think, what we believe, then we have no landmark at all because that landmark is always being moved to accommodate our lifestyle rather than make our lifestyle accommodate the word of the living God and the power of the Holy Spirit." Authority on Her Own Life

[Content Note: Misogynoir.]

Yesterday I mentioned that President and First Lady Obama had sat down with People magazine to talk about some of their experiences with racism. The one example I quoted was Michelle Obama's experience at Target:

"I tell this story—I mean, even as the first lady—during that wonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new."
Now, this didn't happen here, but in a bunch of other spaces, I saw non-black people protesting that the woman in Target probably just asked for the First Lady's help because she's tall. "It wasn't necessarily racism," was a phrase I saw a lot.

These are not mutually exclusive possibilities, of course: It is possible that the woman who asked for the First Lady's help was asking her both because she is tall and because of racism, either because she assumed a black woman at Target was an employee or because she felt entitled to a black woman's assistance.

But that's really neither here nor there, because, for one thing, Michelle Obama's point is not just that this lady asked her for help; it was that no one else spoke to her except a woman asking for help. That context is not irrelevant.

Secondly, Michelle Obama was sharing her perception of the incident. Her perception of her lived experience seen through the prism of a lifetime of being a black woman moving through a racist and misogynist world. I trust her perception of that incident, because I believe her to be an authority on her own life.

I fully trust that Michelle Obama knows the difference between someone asking her to reach something because she is tall, and someone who is the only person who notices her at all asking her to reach something because she's a (tall) black woman in a store where employees are routinely expected to assist customers.

A lifetime of experiences teaches all of us in marginalized populations to discern between innocuous motivations and microaggressions.

And here's the thing: If someone with privilege behaves in a clueless way toward someone who does not share their privilege, in a way that is virtually indistinguishable from an expression of that privilege, that's on them. What's the meaningful difference to a person who perceives that they are being slighted—because that behavior looks exactly like a thousand other deliberate slights they've experienced—that someone is merely unaware of marginalizing behavior instead of actively practicing it? The result is the same either way.

Marginalized people aren't mind-readers who can magically discern someone's intent.

I'm a short white woman who often has to ask for help reaching things. It's my responsibility to understand that people of color are often mistaken as employees by white people, and to be aware of how my behavior might play into that existing dynamic. It's not incumbent on people of color to afford me the benefit of good intentions if I just randomly ask for them to help me reach shit, even if it is just because they're tall. (Tall people don't owe me their free labor, anyway.)

But, back to the main point: All of these apologetics, all the auditing of Michelle Obama's perception of her own lived experience, really distracts from the primary issue. She is telling a story about being the First Lady of the United States of America visiting a Target, and the only person who approached her was someone asking for help.

You really think that's about her being tall? It isn't.

This is really quite amazing: "The United States and Cuba have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and open economic and travel ties, marking a historic shift in U.S. policy toward the communist island after a half-century of enmity dating back to the Cold War, American officials said Wednesday. The announcement came amid a series of sudden confidence-building measures between the longtime foes, including the release of American prisoner Alan Gross, as well as a swap for a U.S. intelligence asset held in Cuba and the freeing of three Cubans jailed in the U.S. Gross arrived at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington late Wednesday morning. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro were to separately address their nations around noon. The two leaders spoke by phone for more than 45 minutes Tuesday, the first substantive presidential-level discussion between the U.S. and Cuba since 1961." WOW.

[CN: Violence] Today is the International Day to End Violence against Sex Workers. On this day, what we can do to in support of sex workers is remember and talk about that stigma kills.

Because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new."

[CN: Torture; police brutality] Hillary Clinton is not great when it comes to talking about issues of race. She always sounds awkward and unnatural, like she's really trying hard to avoid saying the wrong thing. So, I don't know how she sounded when she said it, but I like that she tied police brutality against black communities to torture policies abroad, as part of a culture of abuses and exploitation that needs to change: "What would [Robert F. Kennedy] say to all those who have lost trust in our government and our other institutions, who shudder at images of excessive force, who read reports about torture done in the name of our country, who see too many representatives in Washington quick to protect a big bank from regulation but slow to take action to help working families facing ever greater pressure."

[CN: Homophobia; violence] "The three suspects accused in a heinous attack on a gay couple in Philadelphia on September 11 will stand trial on charges of felony assault and conspiracy, among other charges... Today's preliminary hearing was to determine whether the prosecution had met the burden of proof required to charge and try the defendants. Judge Charles Hayden Found they had." Good.

[CN: Sexual violence; rape culture] Roman Polanski is mounting a legal bid to overturn his 1978 charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. Because of course he is.

In good news: The Church of England has named the Rev. Libby Lane its first female bishop. Congrats, Rev. Lane!

Good Morning! (Or Whatever!)

Here is just a ridiculously adorable video of President Barack Obama being mobbed by kids who love him at the White House Talent Show yesterday, including a kid who tugs on the President's ear in order to tell him something, while First Lady Michelle Obama talks about the importance of the arts for kids. OMG. The cuuuuuuuute!

The clip starts with President Obama handing a microphone to First Lady Obama, to the sound of applause, as they stand on a brightly decorated stage, surrounded by children, most of whom are black.

"Thank you, honey," says First Lady Obama. They kiss. "Thank you, honey. That's how—you guys, I want all the kids to know just how important you are that the President of the United States came by to tell you how proud he was." The kids laugh and cheer. "I just want to thank everyone—to all our principals, to all our teachers, to our turnaround artists, to our funders—this wouldn't be possible without you. Remember what I said early on—just think about the millions of kids who aren't being touched by the arts. Look at how much we're missing. We can't afford to miss out on any kid's talent, reaching their potential— I have seen these kids, from little to—" She puts her hand on top of a little black boy's head and he grins. "This little one has grown up so much! And I am so proud of them. We have to make this a reality for every child in this country. We just have to."

Meanwhile, while she's speaking, President Obama leans down toward a little black boy who's beckoning him. But when he doesn't lean down quite far, enough, the boy reaches up and pulls him down by the ear, and tells him something, to which Obama nods and agrees. He high-fives a little black girl. He leans down and speaks to the kids surrounding him. Some of them gently reach out and touch him, patting him and lying their hands on him. They look at him with awe. He grins and puts his arm around a black girl's shoulders. The kids crowd him and chatter, and he says, "Shhhh" because the First Lady is speaking. He gazes at her, holding some of the kids close to him.
Everything about this video. EVERYTHING.

In the News

Here is some stuff in the news today!

Senate Republicans used a procedural move to block Democratic legislation "that would have provided $21 billion for medical, education, and job-training benefits for the nation's veterans" because they didn't like that the proposed program would have been funded "with unspent money from the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and the winding down of American military involvement in Afghanistan. The GOP says those are not real savings because no one expected those dollars to be spent as those wars ended." Support the troops etc.

[Content Note: Sexual assault] Democratic New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's Military Justice Improvement Act, which "would remove from the chain of command the adjudication of sexual assault and other serious crimes perpetrated by members of the armed forces," will finally be debated on the Senate floor. Something something House of Cards.

[CN: Fat bias] First Lady Michelle Obama, on the rounds promoting the fourth anniversary of Let's Move, says of speaking with her daughters: "We don't talk about weight. We don't talk about physical appearance. We talk about health." Would that she used the same approach in her national campaign. The fact is, it's disingenuous when "anti-obesity" crusaders claim they aren't talking about fat people's appearance, because "obesity" doesn't describe anything but fatness. And when the First Lady, speaking interchangeably about "obesity" and "lack of healthfulness" says stuff like "we know that we are nowhere near solving this problem once and for all," that is eliminationist rhetoric against fat people, because, for many of us, the only way to get rid of our fat bodies is to get rid of us. I am not a problem to be solved.

[CN: Rape culture] Republican Maine state representative Lawrence Lockman says he regrets saying: "If a woman has (the right to an abortion), why shouldn't a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman? At least the rapist's pursuit of sexual freedom doesn't (in most cases) result in anyone's death." By which, of course, he means he regrets someone dug up that old quote, not that he actually regrets saying it. Asshole.

[CN: Police misconduct] Two police officers in Midland, Texas, have been suspended for three days without pay after it was discovered they'd made a game out of stealing signs from homeless people. 1. They should have been fired. 2. The woman at the center of this case was homeless. Lots of homeless people have terrible interactions with police, which might be one reason why they don't feel inclined to cooperate with them.

[CN: Guns; violence] More information is being made public about the night Oscar Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp, including the fact that his first call after shooting her (he claims accidentally, because he mistook her for an intruder) was not to police or any other emergency services, but to a friend, and that when a security guard from his gated community called after the shooting, Pistorius told him everything was "fine." Um.
