Good Things

image that is a nondescript light, glimmery background on which I've added text reading GOOD THINGS'

One of the ways we resist the demoralization and despair in which exploiters of fear like Trump thrive is to keep talking about the good things in our lives.

Because, even though it feels very much (and rightly so) like we are losing so many things we value, there are still daily moments of joy or achievement or love or empowering ferocity or other kinds of fulfillment.

Maybe you've experienced something big worth celebrating; maybe you've just had a precious moment of contentment; maybe getting out of bed this morning was a success worthy of mention.

News items worth celebrating are also welcome.

So, whatever you have to share that's good, here's a place to do it.

I have a couple of lowkey social events lined up for this weekend, and I'm looking forward to them.

Some of the things we planted in the garden are surviving (so far!), and I'm pretty excited about that.

I started my holiday week watching Amy Poehler's film Wine Country, which was released on Netflix May 10 (the day before my birthday), and ended my holiday week watching John Wick 3, which was released in 4DX, and it doesn't get much better than that.

Dudley had a great follow-up with the vet after his dental surgery, and he's all clear to resume his normal ration of treats, about which he is very happy, which makes me happy!

And Zelda had a good appointment with the vet, too, and was an extremely good girl while he clipped her nails because he's got some kind of MAGIC that convinces her to let him do it and literally nobody else, including me, even after countless hours of desensitivity work, but I don't even care as long as those talons get trimmed, which also makes me happy!

My oldest friend, who has also lost three of his cats in the last few years, just rescued an all-black cat who is a very handsome, very shy boy — and doesn't even know yet that he just hit the cat jackpot!

This video of Taylor Swift meeting and adopting her new kitten is the best!

And SQUISHY SEAL!

I am going to spend time with friends this weekend, including friends I haven't seen in a long time, and that is a very good thing indeed! I'm also going to try to spend some time swimming and some time reading, which will be good, too!

I had a very busy weekend of socializing: Friday night, Iain and I joined a group of friends to see Captain Marvel; Saturday night, we had friends over for a game night, during which we ended up playing no games because we were all having too much fun chatting, lol; and Sunday afternoon, we saw some old friends who were visiting relations nearby, and it was great to catch up with them.

It was good to be with good people. ♥

Well, I'm feeling a wee bit better, so there's that. It's a relief not to feel like I'm gasping for air 100% of the time. I still feel like that a lot, but any respite is welcome.

The shutdown is over! And although not everything that the shutdown broke will get fixed right away, or ever, and although there is still a lingering threat that it could happen again, for right now, the announcement brings some much-needed relief to a lot of people. And that is a very good thing.

Well, the end of last year was kind of shit around Shakes Manor. Right after having to replace our washer and dryer, the tub in our upstairs bathroom sprung a leak and caused water damage in the laundry room; our HVAC controls crapped out; our dishwasher started making an ungodly noise; the Subaru took a hit; the Ford died while sitting in the garage; and I ended the year by falling down the stairs and injuring my hand.

Obviously, none of that constituted good things, lol! But when shit happens, there's nothing to be done except find your way through it. And just starting to solve all the problems piece by piece has significantly lessened my feeling overwhelmed, which is itself a good thing.

The plumber and HVAC specialist came today to deal with the leak and the heating. We've got a hole in the laundry room ceiling we need to repair, but there was fortunately no damage to the subfloor and the leak is now (hopefully!) fixed. The HVAC problem is halfway fixed; he'll come back next week to tackle that part, after we had a productive discussion about how to attack the complex issue causing the failure.

It was the first time he's done work for us, and I felt really comfortable with him — which, after my last experience with a plumber in my home, was extraordinarily welcome and a very good thing indeed!

The dishwasher is still working, even though it's on its last legs. A respite there, even if brief, is a good thing.

We've got an appointment scheduled to have the Subaru evaluated, and we have a plan to deal with the dead Ford in the garage. Just getting on the road (no pun intended) to addressing repairs feels good.

And my staircase aches are clearing up and my injured hand is on the mend, which is all good, too. Huzzah!

As you know, I have so many hilarious text conversations with Deeky W. Gashlycrumb every day of our lives, and I am so grateful for each of them. He is a good egg and a good friend, and he brings lots of good things to my life, including lots of laughter. ♥

Coincidentally, after I had already composed the above paragraph, Deeks texted me the below screenshot of an old text conversation, so we could laugh at it all over again, which I am now sharing with you, with his permission:

screenshot of a text conversation, described below
Deeky: Poll: Hitchcock or Skully?

[Hitchcock and Scully are two characters on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.]

Liss: Both. At once.

Deeky: Okay, this took an unexpected turn.

Liss: Hahahahaha

Deeky: Lololol

Liss: [GIF of Hitchcock and Scully high-fiving]
First of all, I need to tell you, friends, that this was not an unexpected turn. It was an entirely expected turn based on literally every other conversation we've ever had.

Secondly, are you even looking at the picture of me that Deeky is using (and has been using FOR YEARS) as my contact photo in his phone?! Hahahahaha he is a monster! I never would have sent him FULLY ONE MILLION selfies of me making terrible faces if I'd known he was going to pick NOT EVEN THE WORST ONE to use like that!

(I am definitely not mad that he's using that photo.) (I am laughing so hard my face is cracking.) (GOOD THINGS!)

In the comments of last Thursday's Question of the Day thread, Shaker bellist, who suggested the question, which was about musical instruments, mentioned having been given an ocarina.

I had no idea what an ocarina was, so, as is my habit when I encounter something new, I excitedly began researching it — and, within a short space of time, I was falling madly in love with György Ligeti's Violin Concerto, which features the ocarina. I'd never heard that piece before, and it's so mysterious and so beautiful!

Anyway. I've been wanting to pick up a new musical instrument for a long while, but the financial threshold to entry for so many instruments is far too high, when I'm not sure I'll have the time and energy to commit fully to learning, no matter how much I want and intend to learn.

However, I found a basic plastic alto-C ocarina, recommended by an instructor on some introductory video lessons I watched, for $40. It just arrived last night, and I'm super excited about it. I'd already practiced the mouthing technique, so I can create a nice sound, even though I don't know the fingering yet.

It's nice to be embarking on a new adventure, which is a good thing. Thank you, bellist, for the question and your answer, which set me on this journey!
