Sometimes when I post a photo like this one, people ask me how I capture the dogs making such great expressions, expecting me, I suppose, to say I'm holding up a treat or a toy with the promise of playtime. But I virtually never "ask them to pose" for pictures. I just see them doing something cute naturally and reach for my phone as quickly as I can, lol.
In this case, I'd just swung around in my office chair and stood up, asking if the dogs wanted to go out, because I needed a 10-minute break to walk around the garden, and Zelly just bolted upright from where she was lying next to my desk and put on this adorable grin in response. :)

Yesterday, Dudley had to have dental surgery, during which he had 19 (!!!) teeth removed. Greyhounds have infamously terrible teeth, because of their narrow jaws (also seen in other breeds like dachshunds), which is often exacerbated by their terrible diet and zero oral healthcare for however long they had to spend living at the track.
That Dudley walked out of there with still half his teeth in his mouth at age 11 is unusually lucky for a grey! (Dogs have 42 teeth, and he had two removed a few years ago.) Zelda, by comparison, still has an entire mouthful of perfect, pearly white teeth.
He was still very groggy when he got home, as greyhounds don't have much fat to help them metabolize anesthesia. I kept a close eye on him throughout the evening, and of course Nurse Zelly was very helpful with the watchfulness.
Dudley got through the night just fine. (I can't say the same for the bloodied pillows and blankets on which he slept, lol!) He's on his pain meds and antibiotics, which he took like a champ. And now he's back to his usual goofy self, although he's very annoyed with me that he's not allowed ALL HIS FAVORITE CRUNCHY FOOD AND TREATS NOW NOW NOW. Not for 10 days.
What this means, of course, for all the rest of us is that we're gonna have a lot more grody beef tongue in our future.
I'm not complaining. I'm just so relieved our boy is okay. ♥

Good Morning! Or Whatever Time of Day It Is in Your Part of the World!
Donald Trump is ranting and raving on Twitter in another attempt to obstruct justice, with plenty of spelling errors so people will continue to believe and say that he's too stupid to be overseeing the erosion of the American Democracy into an authoritarian state.
Federal investigators believe former Trump attorney Michael Cohen "committed bank and tax fraud" and "have zeroed in on well over $20 million in loans obtained by taxi businesses that he and his family own" — and, by way of reminder, Cohen's taxu business partner, Evgeny Freidman, is a Russian immigrant who is cooperating with Bob Mueller's investigation, and maybe all of this will matter someday.
[Content Note: White supremacy] A Trump speechwriter has been fired for having spoken at a "white nationalist" conference two years ago, and, let's be honest, it's only because John Kelly wanted to avoid the bad press about it, not because there are any anti-racist principles governing any decisions in Trump's White House.
Rudy Giuliani is out there still telling blatant lies about the Trump campaign and collusion with Russia, in his continuing campaign to obfuscate the truth and make sure we're talking about how Giuliani's a liar and not the collusion and corruption about which he's lying.
And the Trump Regime and Congressional Republicans continue to reshape the judiciary with great haste, eradicating as quickly as possible the last bastion of checks and balances as they consolidate power.
So here is a video of a puppy doing a somersault.

And thus the week begins.

and give me treats and run around in the yard with me?"
Shakers, the answer was a giant belly laugh followed by a resounding yes.

That fat little sausage is Zelda, napping on the sofa. Only the telltale outlines of her wee triangular Dorito ears give away which end is which, lol.
And because her face is TOO CUTE just to show the back of her head...

On Saturday, for National Dog Day, I tweeted a picture of Dudley and Zelda looking smiley and adorbz, as usual.
Happy #NationalDogDay from Dudley and Zelda, who are the best dogs on the planet. (Tied with every other dog.) pic.twitter.com/Q9pQ8SfS3u

[Image Description: Dudley the Greyhound and Zelda the Black and Tan Mutt sit in the kitchen threshold, looking up at me and grinning. Zelda's tail is a wagging blur.]
@profc71 said: "I can't imagine how you ever got them to both smile and face the camera at the same time!" To which I replied: Asked them if they wanted a treat, lol. This is them saying, 'Yes, please!'"
The truth is, I don't even need to offer them a treat to get a picture of them both looking at me and grinning, because they are the happiest and goofiest puppehs ever. But I was just about to get them a treat when I snapped that particular photo.
So when @firstlastsecond requested "some pup pics" late yesterday, I tweeted another photo from the same series.
Guess where the treat jar is? pic.twitter.com/LtEvZ1mG0F

[Image Description: Dudley and Zelda stand beside one another just inside the kitchen, both looking up in the same direction as my hand, offscreen, reaches for the treat jar.]
LOL. They are the best.

Here Is Something Nice
Mark Freeley was walking his dogs, Storm and Sara, along the beach near the Long Island Sound when Storm ran off and jumped into the water after detecting a deer fawn in need of help. He swam to the struggling baby and grabbed her by the neck, dragging her to shore, where Storm proceeded to nudge and paw the panting deer, trying to help her recover.
Freeley then wisely contacted an animal rescue team to help.
When Frank Floridia and Erica Kutzing of the Strong Island Animal Rescue League tried to get close to the deer, however, the skittish animal ran into the water again — this time, swimming even further out than before. In a Facebook update, the Strong Island Animal Rescue League reported the deer "will receive fluids, feedings, and when old enough she will be released back into the wild. She has a few superficial wounds from her exciting day but will survive."
Floridia jumped into the water to save it.
"It was a do-or-die situation," the rescuer told the New York Daily News. "I really didn't have much of a choice. If I didn't go in the water, the deer would've died."
Thankfully, Floridia managed to bring the deer back to land. He and Kutzing then transported it to the Star Foundation, a Long Island nonprofit animal rescue organization.
Rescuer Kutzing says of the heroic dog who started this remarkable rescue: "I think we could all learn something from Storm. If we just learn to treat each other nicely and look out for each other, despite our differences, the world would be a better place."
And how. Good dog.
Discussion Thread: Good Things
One of the ways we resist the demoralization and despair in which exploiters of fear like Trump thrive is to keep talking about the good things in our lives.
Because, even though it feels very much (and rightly so) like we are losing so many things we value, there are still daily moments of joy or achievement or love or empowering ferocity or other kinds of fulfillment.
Maybe you've experienced something big worth celebrating; maybe you've just had a precious moment of contentment; maybe getting out of bed this morning was a success worthy of mention.
News items worth celebrating are also welcome.
So, whatever you have to share that's good, here's a place to do it.

Here's a good thing I enjoyed very much! A doggeh decides to make herself at home during a performance of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra at the 31st International Izmir Festival in Çesme, Turkey.
Video Description: The chamber orchestra can be seen onstage, beginning to play. From stage right, a dog that looks like a yellow lab strolls onto the stage. The audience chuckles, and, as the conductor notices the dog with an appreciative gesture, they begin to applaud. The orchestra plays on, as the dog stands next to a violinist. As the violinist gets a break and looks down at the dog with a smile, she turns around and lies on the ground beside him, to further applause. And there she chills comfortably, with a contented yawn.
Hello!
Please enjoy this video of Schnitzel the Dachshund leading her friend Chief the Connemara Pony on a nice little walk!
Video Description: A wee black-and-tan dachshund holds a red braided lead in her mouth, which is attached to a harness being worn by a white Connemara pony. A woman's voice calls, "Come on, Nit!" and the dachsy walks toward her, with the pony following behind, and it is ADORABLE.

In the News
Here is some stuff in the news today...
RIP Janet Reno: "Janet Reno, who rose from a rustic life on the edge of the Everglades to become attorney general of the United States—the first woman to hold the job—and whose eight years in that office placed her in the middle of some of the most divisive episodes of the Clinton presidency, died on Monday at age 78. She died at her home in Miami-Dade County, Fla., from complications of Parkinson's disease, according to her sister, Margaret Hurchalla." My condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Nope, nope, and more nope: "Donald Trump's cabinet-in-waiting is taking shape in the final days of the race, as aides eye a number of Trump loyalists for major posts should he win on Tuesday. Among the names being considered, according to conversations with three campaign advisers who requested anonymity to speak freely: Rudy Giuliani for attorney general, Newt Gingrich for secretary of state, retired Lt. Gen Michael Flynn for defense secretary or national security adviser, Trump finance chairman Steve Mnuchin for Treasury secretary, and Republican National Committee finance chair Lew Eisenberg for commerce secretary." That entire list is terrifying, but Rudy Giuliani as AG?! ABSOLUTELY NOT.
"The Justice Department announced today that its Civil Rights Division plans to deploy more than 500 personnel to 67 jurisdictions in 28 states for the Nov. 8, 2016, general election." Good.
This is a moving piece about EMILY's List on the cusp of electing (fingers crossed!) the first female president.
Here's a thing I wrote for Shareblue today: "Clinton's massive ground game reaches 14.5 million people in final weekend." Whoa, right?!
And finally! Please enjoy this video of a small dog dressed as a panda!

In the News
Here is some stuff in the news today...
Oh my heart: "I got to vote for a woman for president!"
I've got two new pieces at Shareblue: "The worst leaks about Clinton are better than the best tweets by Trump" and "Hillary Clinton's new ad about children is why she should be president."
What is even going on? "The FBI has launched an internal investigation into one of its own Twitter accounts. The account at issue, @FBIRecordsVault, had been dormant for more than a year. Then on October 30 at 4 a.m., the account released a flood of documents, including one describing Donald Trump's father Fred Trump as a 'philanthropist.' But it wasn't until two days later, when the account tweeted documents regarding President Clinton's controversial pardon of Marc Rich that the account began to attract significant attention. The account has not been active since that tweet. ThinkProgress has learned that the FBI's Inspection Division will undertake an investigation of the account."
[Content Note: Refugee crisis; death] Oh dear: "At least 240 people are feared to have drowned in the southern Mediterranean, bringing the annual total to 4,220—the highest in the Mediterranean on record. About 100 people drowned when an inflatable dinghy capsized shortly after leaving the Libyan coast on Wednesday, some of the 29 survivors told the UN refugee agency. A further 140 are thought to have drowned in a second incident in another rubber boat early on Thursday morning. Only two people appear to have survived the second tragedy." Heartbreaking. We have to do better than this for refugees. We must.
[CN: White supremacy; antisemitism; violent rhetoric] David Duke, currently running for the US Senate in Louisiana, spent a debate there last night railing against Jewish people and engaging in violent rhetoric against Hillary Clinton: "In defending some unsavory remarks about Jews, Duke said 'I'm not opposed to all Jews... There is a problem in America with a very strong, powerful, tribal group that dominates our media and dominates our international banking.' He also accused such groups of controlling the reins of American foreign policy, citing the civil war in Syria while attempting to draw parallels between those groups and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. 'The lady should be getting the electric chair, being charged with treason,' Duke said." Good lord.
Meanwhile: Six people were arrested protesting Duke's appearance.
Mysterious! Who could it be? "[A leaked casting notice obtained by Fox News] says that it's looking to hire people for an 'up-and-coming conservative media network currently in development,' although it doesn't specify who is doing the developing. More specifically, the casting notice says that it wants on-air hosts and reporters who are 'knowledgeable about conservative viewpoints, current events and the presidential election,' and who also look 'upscale and intelligent' and are 'outspoken and energetic.' The audition also specifies that the network's content will be streamed over the web, which suggests it might not be a traditional cable news network."
