Zelda models the cutest Dorito Ears in the biz.
This dog. THIS DOG. I love this dog. Every day of our lives, I look at her wee adorable face and I think about how I am the luckiest human person that I walked into the Humane Society one day, not even planning on adopting a dog, and found myself kneeling in front of her kennel, falling deeply and forever into her big brown eyes.
She is one of the greatest joys of my life, this silly big black mutt whom no one else wanted.

"Give me all ur foodz."
Olivia Twist is the most insistent, obnoxious beggar in the household. I cannot eat anywhere in the house without being hassled by this cat. If I eat at a table, she jumps on the table. If I eat at my desk, she jumps on my desk. If I eat behind a closed door, she sticks her wee paw under the door and BANG BANG BANG!s it in its frame, yowling like she is being gripped by death. If I eat in a chair or on the couch, holding my plate, she encroaches upon me until I have my plate clutched against my chest desperately, trying to shove her away with my elbows.
If she sees any opportunity at all, she will snatch food right off my plate.
Nothing deters her. I can put her on the floor one thousand times every meal, I can spritz her with water, I can scold her, I can shove her, and she is right back like nothing happened, zeroing in on the FOOD OMG FOOOOOOOOD like a laser. Despite the fact that there is always dry food in her bowl. Always.
One time, four or five years ago, Iain came home with some food from Taco Bell, and no sooner had he set the bag on the table, then Livs had snatched a taco by its wrapper and went running down the hall with it, a trail of lettuce and cheese scattered behind her.
She is so tremendously annoying. And yet I utterly admire her steadfast persistence.

[True Fact: Iain and I were watching Striking Distance, the movie whence came the above-linked clip, and that scene just struck us as SO FUNNY that we reversed and rewatched it like a thousand times, until we were laughing so hard we were crying. And now it's just become a staple of conversation at Shakes Manor. Like, when I ask Iain if he's in the mood to watch a movie, and he suggests Timecop for the biebillionth time, just to annoy me, I am very likely to respond: "Get in your little fucking boat and get the fuck outta here!" When I mentioned this to Deeky recently, he found it and uploaded it to YouTube for me, because he is awesome.]

Dudley, the dudliest of all the dogs.
I am a pushover and Dudley is a chancer. I generally don't dislodge any of the animals if they're curled up in my favored space on the couch; I'll just sit somewhere else. But when Dudley sprawls across half the sofa, sometimes I need him to move so I have a place to sit. And because I feel bad about having to dislodge him, I just go to the kitchen and get a treat, which makes him LEAP! off the couch to get his wee treat, and then I can take the seat without feeling guilty. It's not his fault he's so big!
Well. Basically all I've done is teach Dudley that taking my seat every time I get up means he'll get a treat, lol. Last night, I came back into the living room from doing whatever, and as soon we made eye contact, he jumped up and ran for the kitchen. I walked past him to where he'd been sitting and sat down, while he gave me a pitiful look from the kitchen door.
Advantage: Two-Legs.

♥ Cats
Nine Videos of Cats Meeting Wildlife. I haven't watched all of them, but of the ones I watched, the very last video on the list is my favorite.
All three of our cats are very interested in other animals. (Except mice, who I regret to say are dispatched immediately upon arrival, unless it is daytime and I can rescue and relocate them.) Matilda will observe visiting creatures distantly from the balcony, making her assessments from afar before venturing a greeting. Sophie will tuck herself away in a corner, watching with interest until she feels ready to make an introduction with a gentle head-butt. Olivia just plows right in. "Hey, whuzzup?!" She flops down beside any new animal visitor, risking life and limb—trusting that they mean her no harm and confident in both her fight and flight capacities, in case they do.

Matilda and Her Purse
Recently, I got a pair of earrings (or something) from Etsy, which were delivered in small, gold, lamé bag with a drawstring. Matilda loves lamé almost as much as she loves ribbons, so she immediately claimed this bag as hers and now carries it around with her like a fancy lady. She also wants me to play with her and her purse twenty-seven hours a day, because, even though she is 11, she is still as playful as a kitten given a ribbon or bit of lamé is on offer.
And it's not like she wants to play a little bit. SHE WANTS TO PLAY OMG LET'S PLAY I WILL DESTROY MY PURSE BECAUSE I LOVE IT SO MUCH! She wants to play endlessly, and hard. Something about the material just drives her wild. She rears up on her back legs, looking for all the world like a little blue-eyed Wookie, and punches the purse like it's a speed-bag, and bites at the drawstring making loud NOMNOM noises. It turns her into the cutest demon ever, basically.
If you can view video, here is a video of me playing with Tils and her purse the other day. Every time she turns her head to chomp on the string and makes that zany face, it cracks me up. This, by the way, was after I'd already been playing with her for at least a half hour. And, at the end, she just looks at me like, "Welp, come on, Two-Legs, let's go. KEEP THE GOOD TIMES ROLLING!"
Two hours later, she was back, sitting next to me with her purse clutched between her paws, giving me plaintive looks and yowling at me to play with her again. Which naturally I accommodated because love.
