"Hi!"

Every morning, the alarm goes off, and Iain gets out of bed, and Zelda gets in. Sometimes, she's already in the bed, curled up on my feet, waiting to commando crawl through piles of comforters into the warm spot that Iain has left. She cuddles in next to me, and she finds my hand and nudges it gently, ever so gently, with her muzzle until it is palm up. And then she lays her head in it, waiting for me to pet her velvety wee ears.

Once I stir, Dudley hops to his feet, and he comes over and rubs his long body along the side of the mattress beside me, snorting and tossing his head, like some kind of horse-cat. I roll over to face him, and he nudges my face with his, and I pretend to nom nom nom his impossibly long snout. He stretches in a dramatic bow and wags his tail, thumping it against the dresser, and we both grin.

I sit on the edge of the bed, and it is the last moment of the day I will have without pain. Dudley stands beside me, tucking his nose into the crook of my arm, and Zelly sits beside me, leaning against me and resting her head on my shoulder. And then I stand up, and they leap around with excitement, because IT'S A DAY! WE'RE HAVING A DAY! AND WE ARE ALL TOGETHER! AND ISN'T THAT GRAND?!

Every morning, I wake up to these two lovely beasties and their guileless, joyful expressions of love, which I endeavor to return with abundance. Every morning, I try to remember that this is how I should try to live the rest of my day—accepting love where it is offered, and giving back as good as I get.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Today, the Shelter Pet Project posted on their Facebook page: "Fact: People are three times more likely to adopt a pet if they know someone who already has! Will you promise to mention your adopted pet to at least one person this weekend?" Okay!

My sister got us a squirrel feeder for Miss A's birthday, because squirrels are the future. As it turns out, squirrels are also hilarious and adorable. (Adorious?)

Did I mention the squirrel feeder was shaped like a squirrel head?

Since October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and I've been singing the praises of shelter and rescue dogs, I thought I'd better warn you about some of the things you might have to put up with if you adopt a dog.

Whatever this is.

In all seriousness, every pet has idiosyncrasies, some of which may be challenging health or behavior issues, which aren't always easy to solve. They are imperfect, like their human guardians. The key is finding the perfect pet for you.

And if I have one piece of advice for anyone considering adoption, it's this: Bring home not just the animal that fits into your lifestyle, because there will many of those from which to choose, but the one you fall in love with.

Not the one you feel most sorry for, nor the one you feel like you should adopt, nor the one someone at the shelter or rescue might be kind of pushing on you a little. (Unless, of course, one of those is also the one you can't imagine living without.) Because when problems do arise (and they will), the thing that's going to get you through, provided it's a get-throughable situation (and not all are, and that's okay), is love.

Did you know that October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month? You probably did since I just mentioned it yesterday! So, in honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, here are videos about our rescuing Dudley and Zelda, with additional pictures! As always, please feel welcome and invited to share stories and pictures of your rescued pets in comments.

Dudley

[music: Angelo Badalamenti's "Love Theme" from the score for Cousins]

Text Onscreen: The first time we ever saw our greyhound, Dudley, he had just been rescued from life at the track. And he looked sad. [image of Dudley looking very scared and sad, with his tail between his legs] We brought him home, and he looked pretty scared. At first. [video of Dudley lying on a plaid dog bed, looking up at me dubiously, from his first day with us] But all he needed, to be the confident and happy dog he had never been allowed to be, was love.

Series of video clips: Dudley chewing on a toy then looking up at me shyly; hopping up when Iain enters a room, then stretching and wagging his tail; bumping the camera with his nose; walking up the stairs and down the stairs; swimming in Lake Michigan; trotting at the dog park with his tongue lolling out; playing with Iain at the dog park; letting loose and having a powerful, graceful run at the dog park; spinning excitedly in the living room; wrestling with a blanket; playbowing at me; having a breathtaking run at the dog park that makes witnesses cheer as he runs past them; begging for a treat at home; playing with other dogs at the dog park; more running, with a big grin and his tongue hanging out.

Still pix of Dudz looking cute while chillaxing at home. Text Onscreen: Adopt a retired racer. www.ngap.org
Dudley just off the track, scared and timid, and Dudley months after coming to stay with us, bright and confident
This is the difference that rescue makes.

Zelda

[music: The Turtles' "Happy Together"]

Text Onscreen: We adopted Zelda from the Humane Society on the 16th of July, 2011. We have been Happy Together ever since.

Series of video clips: Zelda coming home in the car; wagging her tail before hopping on the couch; lying on the floor with her back legs out behind her, chewing on a toy, then peeking over her shoulder at me and wagging her tail and grinning; sitting and looking at me with a grin, then running toward me when I back up; greeting me SO HAPPILY at the front door with a wigglebutt dance and joy-spins; hanging out with Dudz on the couch; playing tug-o-war with Dudz; springing out the back door into the garden with Dudz; running around at the dog park; pulling a toy out of the toy box and taking it over to lie beside Dudz on a dog bed; running with Dudz out of my office and down the hall where she jumps on the furniture playfully and joy-spins; chillaxing outdoors; retrieving a ball in the garden; playing with Dudz in the snow; trying to keep up with Dudz at the dog park; running toward me in the garden; grinning at me and joy-spinning.

Still pix of Zelly napping with Iain and hanging out with Dudz and me. Text Onscreen: Opt to Adopt.

Did you know that October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month? It is! The ASPCA and PetFinder have some great ideas on how you can help shelter dogs this month, and of course I encourage anyone who's considering adopting a dog to consider a shelter or rescue dog. Even if you need a specific breed for allergies or some other reason, there are breed-dedicated rescues all over the place now, and, with a little extra time and effort, you can literally save the life of a dog.

Zelda, who has now been a part of our family for almost a year and a half, was on the fast-track to being put down when we found her at a high-kill facility in July 2011: She was a stray at a shelter with no known background (including whether she was fixed or even housebroken), a black dog, an adult dog, a mixed breed, and totally untrained on a leash. Five strikes. Five reasons that everyone else at the shelter that day was writing her off. They passed her cage like she wasn't even there.

But Zelda was worth seeing. She was worth saving. I can't even imagine my life without this clever, loving, Dorito-eared fuzzball who fills our home with infectious joy.

image of Dudley the Greyhound lying on the couch looking like what I can only describe as a MAJOR BOO BOO HEAD! i.e. super cute

If you ever stumble across Dudley lying on a couch making this precise expression (which you definitely will; it's only a matter of time), the proper response, just so you know, is to say: "WHO'S SUCH A BOO BOOS?! LORD DUDLINGTON, YOU ARE THE BIGGEST BOO BOO HEAD IN ALL THE LAND!" in a very dramatic deep baby voice, until he rolls onto his back with his legs in the air and makes a very silly face at you with his tongue lolling out.

Then, just to be safe, you should probably give him ALL THE TREATS followed by ALL THE SNUGGLES. All of them!

Lest there be any question about who really rules Shakes Manor, it is Olivia. Exhibit A:

Video Description: Zelda the Black-and-Tan Mutt eats breakfast out of her bowl. At the other bowl, Olivia the Cat is eating, while Dudley the Greyhound stands to one side, forlorn and helpless, looking at Iain and me plaintively. "Dudley, who's eatin' your food?" I ask him. He looks down at Olivia. "Is Olivia eatin' it?" I laugh. Zelda and Dudley look at us. "He's like, 'What the hell?'" I say. He towers over her, staring down at her eating away. "She rules them so hard," I say. "Look at 'em." Dudley stares, fecklessly. "Dudley," I say, and he looks at me. "Just tell her to get lost. Say: 'Don't eat my food!'" His ears twitch. "Say: 'Hey, kitty-cat! Don't eat my food!'" He looks back at her; hovers.

Iain says, "What worries me is I JUST FED HER." (We just had her at the vet; nothing's wrong with her. She's just a little piggy.) "Eh, she just likes their food better," I say, "especially now that we're feeding them the salmon." Iain corrects me: "It's turkey." I reply: "Oh, is it turkey?" Olivia starts to move away from the bowl, and I exclaim, "Oh, she's gone, Dudz! Hurry!" But she just swings around and starts eating it from the other direction. "Go get it!" I tell him. He flicks his ears, looks back at me as if to say, "Can't you SEE that she's STILL HERE?!"

Dudley turns back to the food and hangs his head pathetically. He leans toward Zelda and sniffs at her bowl. I laugh. "It's total confusion," Iain says. I say: "He's like, 'Zelda, can I have some of yours?'" Iain bursts out laughing. I laugh more. Olivia walks away from the bowl and into the kitchen. Dudley immediately sticks his head in the bowl and begins eating. "Oh, finally," I say. "Phew. He might've starved there."

"It's really funny that he did not bully her out of the way," Iain observes. "Nah," I say. "He's too sweet. He's a good boy." Dudley and Zelda eat their breakfast contentedly, side-by-side.

Dudley and Zelda confab while Olivia eats out of one of the dog dishes
"We have really got to do something about this." "You do something." "No, YOU do it!"

And Exhibit B:

image of Olivia sitting in a cat bed on top of a table in our living room

There used to be a beautiful white glass lamp there. Used to be. Then Olivia decided she wanted that space for herself. For a few weeks, we were chasing Livs off the table, and moving the lamp back into place, after she'd pushed it to the edge to make room for herself to sprawl. Eventually, the lamp ended up shattered on the floor. Now there is no lamp and a cat bed where the lamp used to be.

The Adventures of Watch Dog and Not-Watch Dog, Part 11:

Video Description: Zelda the Black-and-Tan Mutt stands at attention in the garden. She looks into the thicket. Satisfied it's clear of nefarious threats, she saunters over to me and resumes guard position at my side. She looks around; her Dorito ears twitch. I pan right to find Dudley the Greyhound lying on the grass in a patch of sun. He lifts his head to dislodge a fly from his nose. Fin.

Getting a picture of this very active kitten can be a challenge! Often they end up like this:

I am very interested in that cord swinging from the camera.

But eventually she will go to sleep in the cutest, silliest positions:
Laying like this increases my chances of getting belly rubs by one million percent.

I woke up the other day with her laying like that in the crook of my arm.

She has met all the other household members:
Sam had just looked over as she stretched her two bitty paws out near his eyeballs, LOL.

Guess what?! We have another new baby! We've been going back and forth on getting another kitty and yesterday I randomly browsed petfinder (as you do) and saw this sweet baby. Well, we could not resist and she was equally as charming when we went to meet her. Presenting...Lady Jane!

Her coloring marks her a 'red point Siamese'

A mighty bath rug hunter

She is four months old, though we do not know her exact birthday. "Jane" had been one of many suggestions for her name and I cannot hear "Jane" and not think "Lady Jane" because in a book series I adore, Outlander, the main character (Claire--which was another name option) is affectionately called "Lady Jane" by a friend of hers. So that's how she ended up being Lady Jane instead of Jane.
