Weekend Puppehs:

Zelda the Black-and-Tan Mutt sits on the couch looking at me, her tail a blur as it wags excitedly
Zelly, her tail a blur of wagging as I approach her for a snuggle.

Dudley the Greyhound lying on his side on the loveseat, his head tucked underneath a pillow
Dudz, his head tucked under a pillow because the living room was too bright for his nap.

Dudley really needs his own sleeping mask, because he is constantly on the search for Things to Stick His Head Under when he's ready for a hard sleep and we have the unmitigated temerity to have lights on and/or shades undrawn. When he can't find anything, he will give long-suffering sighs, then look at us meaningfully, as if to say, "Can you please do something about the light in here?" He's such a divo.

Zelda, on the other hand, will sleep anytime, anywhere. Just like me.

Matilda is a playful cat. She is talkative and silly and irascible and loves to play with toys. When she was younger, she would play fetch for hours with a balled up piece of tinfoil. But nothing, and I mean nothing, brings out the ferocious play-cat in Tils like a piece of ribbon. She will play with a string or a bungee or a bit of rope, but she goes absolutely wild for ribbons.

Recently, Iain bought me a little gifty which came wrapped in a yellow ribbon. I gave it to Matilda, who naturally went bananas. This video is after I'd already been playing with her for probably half an hour straight.

Video Description: Matilda sits next to me on the couch, batting and grabbing and biting at a piece of yellow ribbon I'm dangling at her. When she manages to get it away, I reach for it, and she nips at my hand in its defense, even though she wants me to grab it and keep playing. She rolls around goofily. When I let her keep the ribbon, she plays with it a little on her own, but looks at me plaintively to KEEP PLAYING! Then she turns away pitiably. The video ends.

I played with her with that thing for probably another hour. For days, she carried it around like it was a magical scepter. Eventually, it started getting manky, and Iain threw it away. She promptly tore a pink ribbon handle off a gift bag that was in my office, lol.

A couple of lovely images of the dogs from the beach last weekend, taken by Shaker GoldFishy:

a close-up of Dudley the Greyhound's face with his ears back and tongue hanging out
"Fangs for the memories!"

GoldFishy and I were talking about how irresistible a subject Dudley is when he's grinning with his tongue lolling out of his head. He just stands and poses, virtually begging for his picture to be taken. I told GoldFishy, "I must have one million pictures of him with his tongue hanging out: Dudley at the beach with his tongue hanging out, Dudley at the dog park with his tongue hanging out, Dudley at Christmas with his tongue hanging out..." LOL.

image of Zelda the Black-and-Tan Mutt lying in the sand, looking out at the water of Lake Michigan
"A gal could do some major rolling in stinky stuff around here."

Walking the dog-friendly part of the beach with Zelda was a great socialization exercise for her, especially since the vast majority of dogs are on-leash there. At first, she was pretty anxious at the sight of all the dogs, and if we got too near a dog, she started pulling and whining, ready to launch into her fear aggression thing, but I made her sit and be calm, and she did it. After awhile, she was passing dogs and ignoring them after a "leave it." Eventually, she was even able to relax.

Good girl.

Yesterday afternoon, I walked out into the living room and discovered this on the sofa:

image of Dudley lying on the sofa with his legs in a tangle and his tongue hanging out, while Zelda sits politely in the background at the other end of the sofa

I went up and gave Dudley's grody beef tongue a little tug, then kissed him on the head. He didn't even stir. He is such a dingus.

This was the view to my left last night, while Iain and I were watching the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. Just a heap of legs, from the direction of which occasionally emanated a heaving sigh of sleepy contentment.

So, the cats aren't allowed in the bedroom.

The reason for this is because Iain is a light sleeper and can't get a decent night's rest with cats crawling all over him. If all three of our cats were like Matilda, who just settles in beside you at night and sleeps soundly if she happens to sneak in, the cats would be allowed in the bedroom. But Olivia and Sophie are nocturnal terrors, who want to roam, investigate, knock shit off every surface, noisily lick anything plastic, and destroy the toilet paper roll in the adjoining bathroom.

Because it's a pain in the ass to try to wrangle them all out of there every night, we just try to keep them out altogether. As a result, trying to dart into the bedroom, aka Cat Narnia, every time we open the door has become Sophie's favorite pastime.

Now, it's not like she never gets time in the bedroom, because she does sneak in and spend THE ENTIRE DAY in there ("Heyyyyyyyy! Everybody! I'minnabedroom! Wooo!") about once a week, and it's not like she never gets nighttime cuddling opportunities, because I occasionally end up in the guest room when Iain's snoring is rattling my brain.

And normally, she's cool at night. But every once in awhile, she spends the whole freaking night scratching at the bedroom door and whining pitiably. And there's no use letting her in, because she doesn't want to cuddle; she wants to explore. LOUDLY.

What I'm saying is: Sophie woke me up at 4:30 in the morning. I am exhausted, and Sophie is an asshole.

Sophie on the Stairs:

I still can't stop thinking about Tony. Wondering where he could be, who he is with, what is he thinking, is he thinking of me, and whether he'll ever return someday...

I totally want a treat. I wonder if Two-Legs will give me a treat.

Sophie lying on her back in the same place, looking at me upside-down
"O hai! I was just wondering if I could have a treat, plz?"

Sophie lying in the same spot, with one paw up and curled in a way that it looks like she's giving me the finger
"Look, I'll even do my 'FUCK YOU CHICK-FIL-A!' finger trick for it! TA-DAAAA!"

For the record, that is not Photoshopped, lol. Also for the record: Sophie hates the fuck out of Chick-Fil-A.

Please note that Olivia has once again managed to photobomb the picture, this time with her asshole.

Dudley the Greyhound in close-up, looking up with a sweet expression

Last night, I was watching the Olympics when Dudley came and sat in front of me and started whining, which is his usual way of communicating that he wants something. He'd just been out, he'd eaten, and there was water in his bowl, so, for a moment, I couldn't figure out what he needed.

"What is it, boy?" I asked him. I reached my hands out to him, and he put his long face in my hands, which is his habit. He whimpered. "I don't know what you need," I said to him.

He rubbed against me, then sat again, and tilted his face toward the space beside me on the sofa, which was covered in pillows. He stood again and snorted at them impatiently.

Zelda has taught Dudley, by example and generation of envy, how to cuddle. It's still new to me, his desire to be so close. I realized he wanted me to move the pillows so he could hop up and snuggle in beside me.

I shifted the pillows onto the loveseat and patted the space where they'd been. "Up," I said. He leaped up, in his typically graceful way, and turned in a circle before setting in along my side, his chin on my knee. He gave a heaving sigh of contentment, and I stroked his ears.

I never imagined the dog who, when he first came to us, peed with fright every time I got near him would someday beg to be near me. He is so not the dog that came off that horrible track anymore, and it makes my heart full.

So, the thing about Olivia is that she is the beggingest thing in all of Beggarton. We literally cannot eat anything without her getting up in our grill and trying to steal food right off our plates and out of our hands. She once grabbed a whole taco off my plate and ran down the hall with it, its contents spewing out in a trail of tasty destruction behind her.

She doesn't have worms. She doesn't suffer from lack of food. It's not like she never gets yummy treats. (Every time I open a can of tuna, all five furry residents come barreling into the kitchen, mewing and whining for their share of tuna water!) She is just completely food-obsessed, which makes her the most obnoxious beggar in the house by a country mile.

We also cannot leave any glass of water, tea, or especially coffee unattended, because she will have her paws in it instantly. And she's so tall that she can peer right over a table while she's standing on her back legs, staring at us and reaching her paws out for our food.

Here is a typical scene as Iain tries to eat his breakfast—oatmeal and coffee—yesterday morning (pictures posted with Iain's permission):

image of Olivia standing beside Iain, who's sitting at the end of the chaise, eating his breakfast
"Hey! Hey, Two-Legs! Can I have some of that?"

image of Olivia standing next to the chaise on her tiptoes, trying to peer into Iain's bowl
"Can I lick that bowl? Please? Save some for me!"

image of Olivia standing in front of the table on her hind legs, looking at Iain's food
"Just one sip of coffee! I promise!"

image of Olivia sitting beside Iain
"I'll just sit here and wait 'til you're done. Are you done yet?"
