It seems that far too often modern Americans have an instinct to cower or run away when threatened instead of fighting back. And he notes, approvingly, that one of his commenters said,
I am discouraged that no one took their books, laptops, anything and just threw it at the guy, no one fought back. It’s that passivity that troubles me.Because, after all, in shotgun v. flying paperback, we all know that the flying paperback will win.
And again, I ask, why isn't it obvious that the real question is not, "Why don't people fight back when crazed shooters invade their campuses?" The answer to that question -- because they're not stupid -- is so obvious that the question isn't even worth asking. After all, throwing a book at a guy with a gun is about the best way of saying, "Shoot me and all my friends!" that I can think of.
No, the real question is, "Why are there crazed shooters on (some) U.S. campuses these days?" And the other real question is, "Why have we so deteriorated as a species that some right-wingers actually think it's easy to stop a massacre in progress?" Somewhere in Hell, Frank Gusenberg is laughing his ass off at the very idea.
