Newt Gingrich: Hypocrite

Paul wrote yesterday about Newt's comments at CPAC last week. Even better is his "revelation" this morning that he had an affair during his charge to impeach Bill Clinton. Of course, this isn't really news. Everyone knew he was boinking his "legislative aide" during impeachment (everyone except his second wife at the time). That he seems to be "admitting" it is why it's in the news.

But his plea "not to be viewed as a hypocrite" is what's startling. Says Newt: "The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge. I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept ... perjury in your highest officials."

Hate to break it to ya, Newty, but your behavior was much more than "deeply embarrassing"...it was also illegal, since in Georgia we still list adultery as a criminal offense in our criminal code:

O.C.G.A. Title 16, Chapter 6, Section 19 (16-6-19): A married person commits the offense of adultery when he voluntarily has sexual intercourse with a person other than his spouse and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished as for a misdemeanor.

So yes, Virginia, he is a hypocrite.

Newt's lucky. If the state legislature had adopted these new rules against adultery, he might have been in real trouble:

(d) Any person committing adultery in this state shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, shall be punished as provided in subsection (d) of Code Section 16-5-1....(2) 'Adulterer' means a person who violates the sanctity of their marital vows at any point. Such term includes all medical or popular designations of an adulterer from the moment of copulation such as slug, slime-ball, player, and similar terms. The provisions of this Code section shall be in addition to any other provisions relating to punishments for sexual impropriety, or use of one’s position to “get chicks.”
