Question of the Day

This is going to sound silly, but I'm genuinely curious.

What are you having for dinner tonight?

See, I cook every night. (Except Friday; that's my night off.) The majority of my friends don't. They eat out, order in, or have something very simple to prepare (frozen dinners, etc). Now, I'm no Julia Childs; I don't always make everything from scratch. But two things always amaze me when it comes to "making dinner:"

1. How many people my age (those darned Generation X-ers) don't cook at all.

2. How many people my age that do cook go all out.

For example, tonight I'm making a red curry with chicken over rice. Now, I'm not making the curry from scratch. I have a bottled red curry sauce from Trader Joe's that I simmer with chicken breasts that I've cut up, along with some onions. I could have put some small diced potatoes in there, but I'm out of potatoes. I made rice, we use seaweed paper, and usually, that's the end of it when I make this meal. Sometimes I also make a vegetable (tonight, I'm steaming asparagus). Easy peasy.

Now, I'm used to my mother's meals... we couldn't have a meal without a main dish, a vegetable, a starch, and a salad. So of course, I feel guilty that I'm not doing enough. And being a good queer boy, I feel like I'm somehow betraying my roots if I don't have something really elaborate prepared, like a jicima salad with cilantro and arugula. (I even had to look up how to spell arugula; they're going to revoke my fag card.) But hell, many of my friends are amazed that I even do this much.

So, what are you eatin' tonight? (Litbrit, don't make me look bad!)
