FUCK SHIT ASS.

*Caution: Venting Ahead*

Ass shit cunt. Fuck. Motherfucking ass-fucking shit. Cock-ass-shit.

*sigh.*

Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of my home state and birthplace, The Man Who Empathy Forgot, plans to veto the gay marriage bill.

I work as a nanny, taking care of a three-month-old baby. Today I had her in the stroller for one of our long walks, and I was watching her sleep and thinking about this bill, before I knew that it was to be vetoed. I thought about the Civil Rights Act, and the incredulity I felt at learning in high school that it was actually voted against by anyone. I thought about Ciara, about the world she will engage with in twenty years, and whether she will experience similar disbelief that it took her ostensibly progressive state until 2005 to climb up out of the primordial ooze and legalize gay marriage.

Maybe that's it, then. These people can't even acknowledge that a fish once grew legs and left the water for something new. They don't understand that life stretches its arms and squirms out of strictures, that if we are 'meant' to do anything, it is to evolve, and that evolution is not purely physical, but as culture arose, it seems, naturally out of groupings of humans, that cultures will inevitably evolve as well to keep up with the complexity of humanity. Today's decision by the governor is, with no exaggeration, a failure to recognize and respect that fact.

Ciara's parents are pretty cool. I know they'll raise her to be tolerant, and past that she'll make her own decisions. But they can't control her sexual orientation, and they can't control an ignorant government or discrimination so entrenched in this country that it seems, today, inescapable. Is it? I don't know.
